Yes, that is what I want. Someday society will be free enough where this is the case. Not in our lifetimes, and maybe not for centuries. But human history is on an upward arc towards more freedom, not less. And someday there will be a world where one segment of people does not presume to tell another segment of people what they may and may not put in their own bodies.

That's actually the farthest thing from 'dealing' with anything there is. It's just a temporary coverup that'll lead to addiction and much more pain down the line.

I am now trying to stack up everything that I/we know about Rush from a public perspective from all these years, plus his intelligence, and hopeful awareness of trying to be 'careful' in how he conducts himself in connection with 'others' - that, I am still hopeful that it is not as bad as currently appears.

But, Rush also has a radio show, and dragging his feet might keep him in the limelight. A denial would be enough for some new listeners to tune out. You can't say, "my publicist advised me not to comment". He's setting things up for a big, public, explanation, where he will probably deny everything illegal, mention that he took painkillers after surgery, maybe that it got out of hand for a little while, and then go on to talk about how the media targeted him because he's conservative. Then he rallies his supporters.

I think that's exactly where this is going. I think the truth isn't as shocking as the media wants to make it out to be but it is, in some ways, damaging nonetheless. The one thing that has always ticked off the left about Rush is that he has given them so little to puncture his reputation with. The worst they could do was call him a divorcee and a draft dodger (he's been divorced twice but was never drafted - the dodger stuff is what the left always implies about conservatives who never actually got into combat - see George W., Quayle, etc.).

So if Rush had any sort of addiction issues or went outside the normal doctor-patient relationship to acquire prescription drugs, the left is going to pounce on it for all its worth and distort it far beyond the actual truth.

But I knew he would not comment specifically on this because there is an ongoing criminal investigation and certainly Roy Black is not going to advise a client to say anything admitting culpability, particularly before being asked in a court of law. I knew it would be a quasi "no comment" at this point.

Since when is the Nat'l Enquirer the police, judge and jury? He may know what the media is saying but does he know what the authorities are saying? After all, the media aren't the people who will prosecute... if there's anything to prosecute.

None of this -- absolutely none of this makes sense. Rush would be the perfect -- PERFECT -- blackmail target. I can't see how he would put himself (and Marta) in that potential scenario. Also, this man can pick up the phone of probably some of the most well-connected physicians in THE WORLD and get this stuff prescribed on demand.

It doesn't add up. Period.

Rush will prevail in this issue. I cannot believe the number of people here that automatically charge him guilty. These accusations against Rush are completely and utterly out of character for him and I am certain he will come out smelling like a rose. I remember the good old days on FR. Some of you are still around but so many of you are sure a bunch of cruel sounding people. Unreal.

The best comparison is not some sort of socialized experiment in Norway but the U.S. before 1914 where all drugs were legal. I don't think that anyone would argue that the drug problem (clogged prisons, turf wars, high use among students, etc) was worse then that it is now.

Comparing the US now with the US before 1914 is idiotic. We have a completely different culture now than we did back then. Our moral standards are lower today. We did not have a mass media back then that glamorized getting high. We did not have a whole generation of kids being raised in single-parent homes. Methods of drug distribution were far less sophisticated back then, etc, etc, etc.

The best comparison is the US before and after 1914, and the fact is that cocain and opium use declined dramatically after 1914. DRUG PROHIBITION WORKED, unlike alcohol prohibition. That's why it was never repealed, unlike alcohol prohibition. Drug use continued at minimal levels until our culture went to hell the late 1960's and 1970's.
