The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need by providing homes close to a loved one during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury. There are currently 31 houses located on the grounds of every major military medical center and several VA medical centers. These houses will play a critical role in caring for casualties from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Donations will be used to help meet the cost of lodging for a family whose loved one was injured in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. There is a limit to the number of families who can stay in a Fisher House and program is committed to help provide lodging for families who must find commercial lodging, because the Fisher House is full.

Cool Our Troops is a non-profit effort to 'Cool' our troops in Iraq. They are raising funds to send personal misters to 50,000 military personnel serving in Iraq. The misters are portable, no batteries or electricity required, and rely on evaporation to cool surrounding temperatures by 20-30 degrees.

Access the Wounded Heroes Guestbook to write a message of encouragement for a hero wounded in the line of duty.   Messages in the Wounded Heroes Guestbook are viewed by wounded soldiers, their loved ones, and the general public.

A couple was going out for the evening. The last thing they did was to put the cat out.

The taxi arrived, and as the couple walked out of the house, the cat shoots back in. So the husband goes back inside to chase it out.

The wife, not wanting it known that the house would be empty, explaining to the tazi driver, "He's just going upstairs to say goodbye to my mother."

A few minutes later, the husband got into the taxi and said, "Sorry I took so long, the stupid thing was hiding under the bed and I had to poke her with a coat hanger to get her to come out!"

Today, Oct 3rd, is the 10th anniversary of
The Battle of Mogadishu
(Battle of the Black Sea)

In 1992, the United States sent Marines to Somalia as part of a United Nations peacekeeping force (Operation Restore Hope) providing food to millions of starving people. Due to a civil war that had cost the lives of more than 300,000 people, international intervention was more than warranted.

After the conflict quietened down and U.S. Marines departed, local warlords battling for control of Somalia soon raided UN food distribution sites and killed UN personnel. The warlords controlled the country by starving their people. No matter that the rest of the world was supplying vast amounts of aid to relief organizations, the people were starving to death by the thousands.

Following the slaughter of UN peacekeeping forces, the United States responded with a show of force. Task Force Ranger was sent to Somalia with the primary mission of arresting warlord Mohamed Farah Aidid and his fellow clansmen for crimes against humanity. On 3 October 1993 members of the Delta Forces and Rangers were engaged in a pitched battle against rebel forces on the streets of Mogadishu, Somalia. The mission had been to extricate rebel leaders from a known meeting place and should have been completed within an hour.

Having met heavy rebel opposition, the 18 hour battle resulted in the loss of 18 soldiers, with scores of injured. The command had requested armored vehicles and AC-130 gunships as support for Task Force operations. Those requests had been denied by the Clinton administration, so Task Force Ranger did the best they could with the equipment they had.

The men who fought this battle did so in a noble and courageous manner. Two soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor (postumously). Other members of the group were awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart, with the "V" device to signify valor under fire.

Although the Rangers and Delta Forces sustained heavy casualties, they had accomplished their objective, having taken important rebel leaders prisoner. Critics of the military and this mission argue that the daylight raid was a failure. They had completed their mission, but four Black Hawk helicopters were shot down during the raid. A secondary mission became necessary. Protecting the lives of their fellow soldiers according to the Ranger Creed gained greater importance.

The Delta Forces and Rangers stood their ground and rescued as many of their men (including the dead and wounded) as was possible given the circumstances. One of the Black Hawk pilots having been shot down in the area of operation was captured and held prisoner for eleven days.

This pilot would not have survived had it not been for the two Delta snipers who gave their lives (subsequently earning the Medal of Honor) in defense of the pilot and his downed aircraft.

SARGE'S RIVERDANCE REVIEW!

Sarge, The Missus, and The Boy had the most wonderful experience on Sunday, 28 SEP 03. Because this was the first Broadway-style show the Detachment attended since "Lord of the Dance" hit EPCOT in '99.

We arrived at the Louisville Palace theater on a cool, blustery Sunday morning, with our tickets at the ready, all set for the matineee last show of the tour. The Boy wore his white shirt, plad vest and dress shoes; Missus looked wonderful in white, green and blue, with a white knit shawl over her shoulder; and Sarge wore simple grey with black tie, with two crossed US flags on ther lapel.

The Palace is a 1920's era theater, from another age, with architecture to match. The theather itself, however, has been redone with stadium-style seating, and three bars outside the doors (Sarge tried, but the Missus, well...)

Well, the show began, as we had practically memorized from seven years of watching the tapes, but the subtle changes, the smaller stage, the younger, more energized dance company - all combined to transport us all from the theater, and back in time to the Ireland of old.

Irish choral, string and drum, and dance, all as we've come to know it, and more. All the numbers we know almost by heart - "Home and the Heartland", "Heart's Cry", and others, all made us just feel wonderful.

And The Boy was good as gold - until he fell asleep during the finale! All that cheering and roaring of the audience, and he's snoozed! Ah, well, he got jostled, and clapped as loudly as we did for the whole assmebled company.

After the cattle rush to leave the theater, we were all quite hungry, and walked across the street to Carmichael's, a yupscale bistro in the theater district. As we sat down to a hearty meal of steak and potatoes (Sarge), hot brown and salad (Missus), and chicken strips and mashed potatoes (The Boy), a boisterous group of young folks ambled into the place, laughing and talking amongst themselves - still in makeup. The principal dancers had come over for the wrap party. Since we saw them first, we stuck our legs out to stop them, and thanked them loudly, leading the restaurant in a round of applause. How they blushed! I tipped heavily, and we all went back home, full beliles and singing hearts.
