Re. Al Sharpton(Sep. 30, 2003) *After a private meeting with the Chairman and CEO of Black Entertainment Television (BET), Mr. Robert Johnson, Democratic Presidential Candidate Reverend Al Sharpton announced that BET, in conjunction with the National Action Network (NAN), will launch a major drive to help register a million new voters by the Spring of 2004.
The drive will be non-partisan and not geared toward any particular candidate, but to encourage people to participate in the electoral process, especially in light of the debacle of the last national election in 2000 in Florida.(bold is mine)
Mr. Johnson has personally given $250k and committed over $1 million dollars in advertisements and productions that will air on BET starting November 1, 2003. The ads will feature well-known artists encouraging young people to register and vote and not allow themselves to be marginalized.
“Bob Johnson’s contribution, and BET’s commitment, is the most significant development I have seen this fall, said Rev. Sharpton. "While many of us are competing for existing votes, he has joined us to expand the electorate so that a Democracy works at its best and victory for progressive politics is assured. There can be no change if we leave only the same participants in the voting booth. Mr. Johnson has challenged me to get others and supporters of other candidates to match him. None of us can win if we bring the same team to the field that has already been defeated.”
Rev. Sharpton has again silenced the pundits by coming in at 7% in a poll conducted earlier this week by Newsweek Magazine, as well as in the double-digits in a New York state Marist College survey, closely behind Howard Dean who is at number 2.
