Noise Source Traced To Buckley Jets On Patrol
DENVER -- Two F-16 jet aircraft from the 120th Fighter Squadron of the Colorado Air National Guard broke the sound barrier over the metro area Wednesday afternoon, creating a sonic boom that prompted dozens of worried phone calls to 911 operators from area residents.
Buckley Air Force Base said that the two jets were flying an "irregular air patrol" for North American Aerospace Defense Command in support of Operation Noble Eagle when they both exceeded the speed of sound, causing the sonic boom.
It was loudest over Westminster and Broomfield, according to people contacting 7NEWS.
"I felt it and I heard a boom and the whole house shook and the ground shook," said Velma Helker, who was in her Thornton home when the sound exploded between 3:18 p.m. and 3:23 p.m.
Colorado Guard spokeswoman Capt. Holly Peterson said it is not normal procedure for Air National Guard jets to break the sound barrier over a populated area. She said the pilots have given a report to operations personnel and their commander.
Colorado Air National Guard Brig. Gen. Mike Edwards said that the pilots could face action ranging from additional training to punishment.
"This was well into the mission. It just happened to be a mistake. This aircraft is a supersonic aircraft and if you're not careful you can exceed the speed of sound," said Edwards.
There are areas in the United States where jets are allowed to break the sound barrier, but Colorado does not have supersonic airspace.

I used to love the booms made by the B58 Hustlers back in the early 60's. The sound of freedom.

The sign at the entrance to the MAW at Beaufort SC says just that:
"The sound you hear is the sound of freedom."

Oops. I accidentally bumped my throttle and broke the sound barrier by 650 miles per hour. But just for a few seconds.

Wonder what was irregular about it...think they were in a hurry to get somewhere for something..I don't know. But the 16s from Buckley usually fly right over my house on their normal patrols. They didn't yesterday...

Wonder what was irregular about it...think they were in a hurry to get somewhere for something.. There's a big NATO meeting in Colorado Springs next week. Most likely they're doing training for contingency responses.

We used to hear sonic booms all the time on the Western Slope when I was growing up.

Heh! My Wife woke me up with a scared, "What the hell was that?" I'm on graveyard and usually wake up at 3:30. Yesterday, I woke up to her and the dog whimpering in the bed trying to crawl UNDER me...
This is the same mutt that whizzed on my Wife's foot when thunder hit... Whatta PUSS!
I slept right through it. But, then I've been known to sleep through Harriers going supersonic and 5" cannon fire one bulkhead away from me on my ship.

We live 10 minutes away from BAFB. I didn't hear the sonic boom the other day but two of these guys flew over our townhome this afternoon. Gave me chills. I'm so proud of our military.
