Bush administration officials yesterday angered lawmakers by refusing to take a position on illegal aliens obtaining U.S. driver's licenses and avoiding questions about its decision to recognize Mexican identification cards.

Officials testifying before the House Select Committee on Homeland Security said they are reviewing what documentation is secure and reliable, but evaded direct questions on the matricula consular cards now accepted by California and New Mexico to obtain driver's licenses.

Let's not forget, they're not an Office anymore, they're a DEPARTMENT!!!!! A department with nothing to do but dream up color coding schemes, corner the market on duct tape, and practice shooting down airliners because there's no mandate to secure the borders.

Don't play around the edges of the elephant in the room by accusing me of being upset with a few pork barrel bills. What will effect all born in the USofA is the illegal alien vote.

You can't continue to tap dance around that issue and be honest. I was flamed to a golden brown for saying a year ago that the plan was to give them the vote, now you see it happening with your own eyes. There is an obvious move afoot to fold the USofA into other countries via the citizens being out voted by illegals and the FTAA treaty. I bet you didn't go read the FTAA site like I asked you to.

Now if you want to call that the New World Order, or One World Goverment, or Gobal Totalitarianism, pick your label, it is happening before your eyes, intentionally aided and abetted by the Republican politicians and the Democrat politicians. So open, open, open, those peepers.

No, what's down are apprehensions. At best, we have a slower rate of growth of the Illegal Alien population in the United States. By any estimate, there are now a couple of million more Ilegals than there were in January of 2001.

There are other factors that might account for the reduction in apprehensions. Since over 90% of apprehensions occur within three days of crossing the border, a reduction could be the result of fewer back and forth border crossings by Illegals since 9/11.

Also, the sluggish economy has reduced demand for Illegals.

There's plenty of spin coming from the Feds on Illegals, but not much in the way of actual results.

No surprise, really, since the plan is Amnesty by "guest worker" anyway.

The fact that illegal aliens have increased their donations to Mexico from $9 billion to $12 billion in one year says alot. To me there definitely has been an increase in the number of illegal Mexicans.

Quite possibly the apprehensions are down but I don't think the numbers crossing are down.

Our economy has been sluggish this past year for legal and illegal jobs. The only way that this increase of 3 billion could possible be is that we have had a drastic increase in illegals. As I don't think their salaries have been increased this much. Do you?

The only other reason that I can think of that would put extra money in the illegals pockets is that the WIC program has been increased from baby to the age of 5 year olds. When you can use government money for groceries, then one can afford to send money home.

Oops, I reread the article and found the previous high of last year to be $10 billion and this year $12 billion.

Or it could just be that illegals are sending less cash through the mail back to Mexico, et al, while sending more wires through banks (where the money can be more easily traced and filed into our stats) now that consular cards and such make it easier for them to obtain bank accounts...

Let me guess, this is a government statistic? Maybe not, after all they are all in the USofA now. They have closed several public schools in Mexico City due to lack of population.

I believe the illegals have always sent money via wire transfers rather than the mail system due to corruption in Mexico.

This is a rather moot argument at this point as our borders will not be closed by this administration. Probably the only way to tell for sure how many Mexicans are crossing the border would be to compare the rise in state deficits with the increase in money sent to Mexico.

I voted for Alany Keyes in the primary. Not voting for Bush in 2004 will put Hillary or Dean or Kerry in the White House - far worse choices.
