Maybe (IF THIS STORY IS TRUE TO SOME EXTENT) this will open his eyes to the 'war on some drugs' and its failings.

Worth hoping for.

From a Q&A on Oxycontin: 4. Are there any activities that I should not perform while using OxyContin for pain relief? OxyContin may interfere with your ability to do certain things that require your full attention. You should not drive a car, operate heavy machinery, or do other possibly dangerous activities while taking OxyContin. Now, if someone were taking, say even 4-6 of these babies per day, how could that person possibly go on the radio every day and do what Rush does, like respond to idiot libs who call in? Of course, we will all know soon enough, but to suggest someone could function day in and day out with this many chemicals streaming through your body & still put together complete sentances is laughable at best.

As usual, one of my main interests/concerns is what sort of strain this issue might place on the various factions in the party. I tend toward the libertarian - keep the government out of my pocketbook and out of my bedroom. So, I have serious problems with the War on Some Drugs. My take on this story about Rush is:
1. Interesting, if true; and
2. If he has a drug problem, that doesn't make him a bad person. Let him have the medications he needs to treat any pain he may have and give him help to overcome any addictions he may have.

Republicans of a more socially conservative persuasion may be less forgiving. And, frankly, they should be. One thing you have to admire about the social conservatives is their morally principled stances. If they support the War on Drugs generally, I suppose they are more or less obligated not to give dispensation to Rush on the drug issue simply because, in every other respect, he is a good man. Just some early thoughts. I haven't had my coffee yet. (I guess you could call that my drug problem.
