KUWAIT CITY (AP)--Kuwaiti security authorities have foiled an attempt to smuggle $60 million worth of chemical weapons and biological warheads from Iraq to an unnamed European country, a Kuwaiti newspaper said Wednesday.
The pro-government Al-Siyassah, quoting an unnamed security source, said the suspects had been watched by security since they arrived in Kuwait and were arrested "in due time." It didn't say when or how the smugglers entered Kuwait or when they were arrested.
The paper said the smugglers might have had accomplices inside Kuwait. It said Interior Minister Sheik Nawwaf Al Ahmed Al Sabah would hand over the smuggled weapons to an FBI agent at a news conference, but didn't say when.
Government officials couldn't be immediately reached for comment.
Iraqi Interior Minister Nouri Al-Badran met Tuesday with Sheik Nawwaf and discussed cooperation between the two countries in security matters. His visit is the first by an Iraqi interior minister to Kuwait since 1990.

Some of these foreign news sources aren't very reliable.Just checked Debka...it's not there : )
Although...they did report the Bekaa Valley/WMD link way before the convoy of trucks crossing over the border in Jan 2003 "registered" with the CIA.

If this pans out, I can just see the Maureen Dowd/Molly Ivins spin:
"So it only cost us $86 billion to capture $60 million in wepons? Such a deal!"
Or
"Maybe Bush should fire Rumsfeld and hire the Kuwaiti Secretary of Defense"
Or
"Maybe we would have found them ourselves if Bush weren't so busy trying to destroy the reputation of Joseph Wilson"
To: steveegg
The answer is self-evident. If this is true (and the DowJones wires and Hindustan Times aren't pulling our legs), this would absolutely, positively destroy the Leftist Media's attempts to assassinate President Bush's character and attempt to get re-elected.
If it's true (and I put the chance of that at about 5%) I think you underestimate the spin powers of the left.
They'll point to this smuggling attempt as evidence that the confusion and chaos of post-war Iraq is making Iraqi WMD MORE avaliable to terrorists and will claim that the war thus made the world less safe.

I have a subscription, and sure enough the story is posted on today's WSJ online.
Unfortunately, it's just the same text as posted in the lead of this thread. No new information.

A Kuwaiti newpaper quoting an unnamed "security source".
Until I hear it from the US Adminstration, I'm not getting my hopes up.
Show me the WMD!
However, if true, this is a bombshell. The best case scenario would be if they were live warheads destined for Bosnia, Albania, Kosovo or Chechneya......that would send fear throughout our opposition in the SC and allow us to write the future script. Iran, Syria, NKorea........will be much easier to "disarm" through regime change with the full support of the SC.

The former ambassador who accused the White House of leaking the identity of his CIA officer wife to the press says Washington reporters told him that senior White House adviser Karl Rove said his wife was "fair game."
The ambassador, Joseph Wilson, said he plans to give the names of the reporters to the FBI, which is conducting a full-blown investigation of the possible leak.
"I will be revealing the names of everybody who called me and cited White House sources or cited people specifically," Wilson said in an interview with Nightline's Ted Koppel.
