I've looked it up in the State of Virginia driving manual and I can not find where it says a bike can't pass on the right. I've passed cops on the right and never once has one told me not to do it.

What side you pass on is irrelevant -- I'm talking about what vehicles are supposed to do at a stop light; specifically, 'STOP'. *Behind* the vehicle(s) that stop in front of you. *Until* the light turns green & traffic resumes moving. A red light does not signal a free-for-all to see who can weave their vehicle into the best starting position. All I'm saying is that if bicyclists want to be treated like cars, they ought to act like them consistently.

The answer may lie with statutes governing motorcycles. In CA it is legal for motorcycles and bicycles to "lane split," in other words to pass between stopped cars, but it is illegal to lane split in MN. As I've always understood the onus is on the lane splitter to make sure it is safe to do so.

Good point, Sloth, I agree with that. If Bicyclists, especially on a busy road loaded with people commuting to work, stopped behind the vehicle ahead of them at lights as the autos of neccessity must, then neither drivers or bikers would be stuck with the hazzards of passing over and over after every stop light.

If that isn't the law, it should be.

Your reasoning is circular. As far as I can tell there is no requirement for a bike to stop behind a car that is stopped at a light. Try again.

I don't think cyclists want to be "treated like cars." Cyclists are, in reality, mechanized pedestrians and therefore, most likely, would like to be treated like people. As for the legal right to use the road, cyclists have that already and don't have to appeal to car drivers for acceptance.

Car drivers only have to press lightly on a pedal to go and press another pedal with slightly more effort to stop. Alternatively, cyclists exert considerably more effort to achieve cruising speed after coming to a stop. In light of this, most people will recognize that cyclists will do what they can to maintain inertia, balanced with maintaining their life.

I'm sorry if your life is in such turmoil that you find yourself in a life or death struggle with tyrannical bicyclists . I hope you find peace.
