Yes, I'm sure of the article. It was in the Pioneer Press, and mentioned my county specifically. I remember stories about the influx in Maine also, and how their social services were being overloaded.
The Twin Cities area has the largest population of Somalians in the U.S. The Twin Cities area also has the largest number of Hmong of any metropolitan area in the nation.
Interesting point about Maine's welfare checks. I didn't know anyone could beat Minnesota's!

I just remembered something -- somewhere Somalis publicly cheered the attacks on 9-11. Was that Minnesota?
Immigration was intended to serve the interests of the United States. Now, we've become the world's biggest charity ward.

Not that I recall, but since we're on the subject of taxpayer supported immigrants,
check here.

Explain California.... here is a Democrat state about to throw out a Democrat governor in a recall election and elect a Republican.Easy. In fact a no brainer.
A bad governor (regardless of political affiliation) is about to be replaced by a candidate who has promised to return California to it's previous financial health "to keep our programs going". Those "programs" are Democratic sponsored social programs.
That candidate is almost a perfect candidate for the Democrat businessman and is very acceptable to the Democrat masses especially the Hispanic voter since "Deportation is not an option".
I'm surprised you even pondered the question.

Many of these folks arrived poor and unable to read, write or speak the English language. Almost all arrived with incomes well below the median of American families.
Ain't that the truth!

Pat has become just as irrelevant to the GOP as the constitution and the rule of law.

Where is he wrong here?
He is wrong on the War on Terror, but not on immigration and the national culture.

i disagree here.
Secure our borders is a necessary element in the war on terrorism, just as destroying the islamists abroad is.

It took generations for the Germans to assimilate in the US anc this only occured AFTER the 1920's immigration restriction laws.
Same with the Irish, Italians, Poles.....

The anti-Buchanan freak-outs don't usually address the substance of his columns. Maybe if he wrote a column called "Stickin' It to the GOP" we'd see them able to argue against something he'd written.

But why are conservatives and Republicans going along?
That is a question I would like to see answered. I was amazed at the fervor with which Bush wanted to dismantle the southern border before 9-11.

Immigrants are sinking our countryTake at look at what the massive invasion has done to California's budget. Behold the future for all of America!
We are going to become a third-world, bankrupt, sewer.

I don't know about welfare checks from state to state, but I understand that TX has some of the smallest. I have also read that NH has less generous welfare than does Dean's VT or Snowe's ME. Wouldn't CA be the mecca of welfare and explain to some extent the illegal immigration problem there?
