Well the question is obviously rhetorical but let's look at some interesting data from the latest LA Times poll. And well considering how so many Tom supporters trust the LA Times I figured they might find this data quite interesting.
What is your impression of Tom Mclintock?
Favorable: 62% (likely voters) Breakdown: 39% (Dems) 88% (Rep)
Unfavorable: 25% (likely voters) Breakdown: 40% (Dems) 8%(Rep)
What is your impression of Arnold Schwarzenegger?
Favorable: 58% (likely voters) Breakdown: 30% (Dems) 89% (Rep)
Unfavorable: 39% (likely voters) Breakdown: 65% (Dems) 10%(Rep)
Should Tom McClintock stay in the race to help the Democrats split the Republican vote? (Paraphrased)
Stay in: 58% (likely voters) Breakdown: 80% (DEMORATS!!!) 36% (Rep)
Drop out: 36% (likely voters) Breakdown: 15% (Dems) 61% (REPUBLICANS!!!)

If you want to accept the obvious liberalization of the Republican party, go ahead. I won't.

You're a tool for the liberal candidate (Arnold), so how's that any different?
To: rintense
In 1992 we had Bob Michel as House Minority Leader, Bob Dole as Senate Minority Leader and Bill Clinton as President. The Dems had controlled the House for 40 years. They owned the Statehouses, legislatures and courthouses.
Do I need to walk you though the individuals who controlled the House and Senate Committees back then? We're talking Kennedy, Biden, Byrd, Gonzalez, Rostenkowski, Dingell. RON DELLUMS!!!!
Give me a break. Liberalization from WHAT?? Mark Hatfield? Bill Cohen? Warren Rudman? Dave Durenberger? David Gergen?
SCOTUS Justice David Souter? Iran Gate?
Yeah, it's all falling apart.
Is there a gas leak on FR?

McClintock's true party is the CRA. He just associates with the California Republicans Party in name only.

Q32: Tom McClintock has been under pressure from some
Republican leaders to drop out of the race to consolidate the
Republican vote behind Arnold Schwarzenegger. McClintock
argues that he should stay in the race to give voters a choice.
What do you think? Regardless of your vote, should
McClintock drop out of the race to consolidate the
Republican vote behind Schwarzenegger, or should he stay in
the race to give voters a choice? (TWO RESPONSES ROTATED)

Q6. You still get a chance to cast a vote for one of the replacement
candidates, even if you voted NO, not to recall Governor Davis, or
didnt vote on the recall at all. If the special recall election
were being held today and these were the candidates, for whom would you
vote: Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante, a Democrat; state Senator
Tom McClintock, a Republican; actor and businessman Arnold Schwarzenegger,
a Republican; financial investment advisor Peter Miguel Camejo, a
Green Party candidate; columnist and author Arianna Huffington,
an independent: for whom would you vote: Bustamante or McClintock or
Schwarzenegger or Camejo or Huffington or would you vote for someone
else or would you not vote for any candidate?

What a crisp, concise polling question.
"15 percent of the 99 percent who didn't hang up on us mid question support McClintock if they can go now."

I've come to the conclusion that it's just too late for Tom to get out of the race. Recalling Davis is more important than worrying about the eight percent Tom will likely pull on election day. That being said, Tom should focus all his attention on Davis and Bustamante, and getting the vote out.
However, I find it disturbing that people are trying to make their vote for Tom count in a nonsense manner.. That of making Tom come in second and Bustamante in third. Look, I understand wanting to make something good out of the support they've given Tom, but really, this concept does far more harm than good.

"- a Republican who can be trusted to keep his word

How about a conservative that can be trusted to keep his word to Republicans ?
Heard an old clip of him yesterday on the radio (Hannity?) saying how he would drop out if staying in would hurt Republicans chances of winning.
( oh that's right - if youre not Tom, you're a RINO - so he's covered himself )

And tell me, what is this new trend of FR to write a post in short lines so it is difficult to read and looks like a poem? Is this what they are teaching in school now? HLL, we had a slew of skeptical of war, fearful of nothing particular, newbies last Spring who dispensed with the shackles of capitalization. That has never been protocol around here, but 31 clueless goofballs arrived en masse ... whattya gonna do? Send them back to Fred Mertz's guest house?
Was that you who asked whether another similar poster if they had a problem with their keyboard? LOL
I don't mind that the residents of the Home for Criminally Insane have open access to this forum until "Haiku Night". It's when they start dancing ...
