Either McClintock or Schwarzenegger Likely Winner in California if Other Dropped Out
With Arnold Schwarzenegger the Republican front-runner in the California gubernatorial contest, many GOP officials have pressured California State Sen. Tom McClintock to drop out of the race, fearing he will divide the Republican vote and allow Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante to win. A CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll, conducted over the past weekend, shows that McClintock does indeed draw support away from Schwarzenegger, though not enough to deprive the actor of the lead among probable voters. But the poll also shows that if Schwarzenegger were not in the race, McClintock would likely be in first place by a substantial margin, rather than behind Bustamante.

Don, I have provided with with a historical outline, that you have rejected for reasons you won't list.

That isn't optimism

That's called DENIAL.

"I am really getting the feeling that the ARNOLD SUPPORTERS don't WANT a conservative"

No polly, we just don't want Tom.
We don't like him. And it's become quite personal. He and his followers with their "baby killers" crapola pretty much sealed his fate.

Holier than thou arrogance turns some folks off.
turns others on... maybe that's you.
I say PLEASE vote your conscience, but TOM is FARTOBEHIND to be relevant. He will not be elected and is headed for party discipline that will end his career.

The majority of California's republicans, and our leadership do NOT want a arrogant ideologue who cannot work with others, sitting in Sacremento... calling the shots. By that I mean TOM.. and Tom alone... has been resoundlingly rejected by the folks who oppose abortion and new gun laws. He now has almost NO party support.

Tom WILL be defeated. Bustamente is no longer the object of this war, or simply Gray Davis.
This is NO LONGER just about Arnold being the best man. It's about BEATING the right wingers in and then the more strident of them out of the party... and it will be done... in a few more days. The hard right in California will soon be disenfranchised... and will lose whatever voice they had.

That is actually good, because without their stridency, some, not all, but some conservative causes will advance... and those small "wins" will generate others. Partial birth abortion will be targetted, as will parental notification. Arnold will KILL all new gun bills AFTER he is elected...

the "all or none" crowd always gets NOTHING...
and this time, the righty tighties in California are going to get nothing. Unless tom actually turns the water into wine or something.

When FR first stared and for a while thereafter, I thought that Jim wanted this site to becomne what you posted about a proactive, political body of the populace. I seem to recall him even saying so...sort of. It's what it could and SHOULD have become; it didn't.

A while back, there were several articles ( posted to FR and in the news and talked aboutall over T.V. and radio )about such a site and it was a Dem/lefty one. The howls went up on FR and the screaming about how we are better ( nope, FR most assuredly is NOT , but should be ! )were amazing. The reason that FR is absolutely ineffective, are those, so well stated, by you. Because of this, FR is hardly more than a chat room and as such, is powerless and becoming irrelevent to the powers that be and the media.

The stated " goals " of FR, are likewise good, but also, as the with the posting rules, misleading and inapplicable to some.

FR isn't " pristine ",is unprincipled, Balkanized, and close to being broken without the possiblity of ever being repaired.

I posted this before and it sums up my feeling on the recall......

This is redundant at best but here goes.

Tom cannot win.

Arnold espouses more conservative principals than the democrats who are now in office do.

Its better to have half a loaf than no loaf...yada...yada...yada.

I know this make no sense to you but it is the way things are at present.

Live in a dream world if you will, imagine California turning conservative overnight....but your just dreaming.

Tom is enabling the democrats by staying in the race and that is a fact. Take small steps...walk.......then run.

It's not Freeping with a sign or costume in front of the White House, at a Hillary signing or Gore appearance. That's what the powerless do.

Fascinating.

Myself, and many like you nopardons, see Free Republic as a remarkably potent "change agent". That entails stopping the listing and sharing of grivences at some point, and turning the bitching to a group discussion of political strategies to attack the problem, change the dynamic and ensure our interests. It's not Freeping with a sign or costume in front of the White House, at a Hillary signing or Gore appearance. That's what the powerless do. We need to oraganize action within the political institutions where sh** happens. At the money centers of the GOP. At our County Board meetings and our Representatives town hall meetings. Then we share our outcomes with each other and replicate the successes.

This sounds incredible... Is there any possible way to start such a group within Free Republic for interested members? If necessary, we could use an additional moderated yahoo group for just those Freepers interested in participating in pro-active strategies and actions...

CA's GOP under Governor Arnold will attract many times the number of the departing ideologues, many of whom do not vote, electing instead, to stay home and pout.

As a matter of fact, the vast majority of newly registered voters for THIS election have chosen the GOP. Why? Arnold.

Huey P. Long, Jr., D-LA, said that in the last days of the nation, the people could embrace fascism, and if they did, they would call it "anti-fascism."

What diseased sense of reward do you get from posting this crap here? Who the hell are you to call freedom loving, conservative Republican patriots "fascists" or "socialists" or anything else? Who are you to tell Arnold Schwarzenegger he's not a Republican in Name and Deed?

Who wants you guys in a political party? In a conservative community of proactive energy? In our public discourse?

Your boy spent $13 million to garner 450,000 votes and effectively destroy a Third Party platform. You guys are rotting carrion, if rotting carrion had a fouler stench and a less hopeful future.

I'm bullish on a new marketing campaign for Free Republic's TruePatriotRealConservativePrincipledFew to communicate their uniquely held purist truth: "Free Republic: Where only We See How Your Life Sucks."

Yes but: If Arnold was out Davis/Cruz would go full bore on McClinton. You know, the usual ultrarightwingconservativeracisthomophobeantichoiceneonazi attack ads. He'd be toast in no time.

It's an interesting dynamic. With McClintock in the race the dems can't open up on him. Indeed, they're even supporting him (through the tribes) in order to split the vote. Great idea...if we vote for him.

To the principled McClintock voters: Please consider that Gov McClintock can't do a thing about abortion. But Gov. Arnold can help McClintock win the Senate where he CAN do something about it.

Time was, not so very long ago, that Republicans and especially Conservatives didn't even attempt to fight back. Time was, not so very long ago, the GOP was a BIG TENT ( which is a good thing ! ), with everyone welcome and wanting to get some ( NOT ALL and NOT IMMEDIATELY, EITHER ! )of their agenda passed. In order to do that, they all knew that it was imperative to get more and more and MORE GOPers elected. Time was, not so very long ago, the fringe eliment knew this too.

Times have changed and the fringers, not willing to accept this concept, went on their way or stayed home, and allowed the Dems to gain more ground, became more and more vocal in their condemnation of others, who were on their side, offended them and some split off. The fringe parties have either imploded, grown even smaller in number, or remained in the party, but doesn't support it or its candidates.

Tom can't win. Even IF Arnold dropped out, Tom can NOT win, because he has offended more Republicans, of EVERY stripe, than he has garnered supporters and he has NO cross over vote appeal.

There are two different worlds here...reality and delsuion. There are two distinct groups...those who want " purity " and those who accept the fact that NO politicain is " pure ".

POLITICS IS THE WORLD OF THE POSSIBLE . Those who refuse to adjust, lose.Losing isn't " principled " and it doesn't further one's goals.

Oh Gosh, its so nice, we should give all the Tomikazies a special olympics type of medal for coming in third, so that we don't hurt their self esteem.

Tom could never win, not in this election, or one without Arnold (because he would face Riordan, Simon, Issa).

Tom is at 15% in the polls, at least 5% of that is bravado from nutty patriots and evangelicals that will evaporate. Tom gets no more than 11% in the final run (taking into account the early votes)

So, Tom McClintock, who had a limited position of power will flame out, and destroy a career where he could have made a difference for California.

Now, he will just be a trivia question...

It isn't even remotely possible " within " FR.

Forming such a group, outside of FR, would ONLY work, if there were enough of us and that site became prominent and well known.
