What was interesting was that this group is pushing for PC 158, the shameful law passed in 2001 that opened Tennessee Driver’s Licenses to illegal aliens. They were complaining that conservatives and “other forces of evil” are working to rescind this law (which is a national embarrassment to this state).

I've always been curious to quiz some of our visitors from south of the border why having a driver's license is of such urgency to them. Surely it's not because they feel an overwhelming compunction to comply with the law, otherwise they wouldn't be here in the first place.

I'd love to hear a reason, amigos, why a driver's license is so important to you. It wouldn't have anything to do with our extant motor voter law, would it?

"I'd love to hear a reason, amigos, why a driver's license is so important to you."

Mexicans have a real love affair with automobiles. Part of it stems from rampant theft and vandalism in Mexico that makes owning a vehicle there a heartbreaking experience for all except those who can afford protection (drug dealers, politicians on the take, etc.).
A nice car or truck is also a psychological totem of success for people who have come up from poverty. The Mexicans go further than that with a "machismo" thing that I can't figure out, but suspect there is a ratio between the flashiness of the ride and the size of their genitals. Someone can probably get a good college paper out of the subject.
Thank you all again for your support!

Whenever I've crossed over the border from Mexico at the border bridges, I've only been asked verbally my citizenship, I know some people who aren't Americans have said the same thing ---- if they say "American" that's it, they're over (even if they aren't). I have talked to some people who have been asked to show a US drivers license. That's the most proof anyone ever has to show.

The reason most really want the drivers licenses isn't even to vote---- it's so they can travel freely throughout the USA and of course back and forth over the border whenever they feel like it.
