ELIA KAZAN DIES AT 94
Director Elia Kazan, who was honored with best director Academy Awards for "Gentleman's Agreement" and "On the Waterfront," but also vilified in some quarters for "naming names" of alleged Communists in the 1950s during the House Un-American Activities Committee probe, has died at his home in New York. He was 94. In 1999, the Motion Picture Academy presented him with an honorary Oscar for his body of work, which revived the controversy among living actors, writers, directors and producers who were blacklisted in Hollywood as a result of the HUAC investigation.

I remember the Oscar telecast in '99.....
..and the controversy of Kazan presented with the special award.
....and Ed Harris remaining seated----his disrepect of Kazan showing in his smirky face----while almost everyone else stood and applauded.
I've not wanted to watch another Ed Harris movie since, even though he's a passable actor.
Harris has no class.

This is a guy who had real courage to do the right thing at a most difficult moment.
Hollywood lacks people of such courage and has become overpopulated with people who make subversive comments, but, I believe, aren't intelligent enough to be truly subversive.

Isn't Ed Harris the actor that plays a man?

According to The World Almanac, he was born 9/7/1909 in Istanbul.

Nick Nolte wouldn't stand, either. And others..

He was in the Oscar audience this year. I wonder if he clapped for Polanski?

Yes, as my grandpappy from southern Georgia used to say..."Just another man dead." But Elia Kazan was truly a great director. My favorite film was "America, America". It starts with his voice, "My name is Elia Kazan" and tells of the story of a Greek immigrant from Asia Minor (Macedonia) going to America...They don't make movies like that anymore. God bless him for turning the left wing propagandists over to the authorities. They had it coming trying to brainwash us into thinking communism was ok. Tough on them. Horray for Elia Kazan. A patriot.

Is that an actual quote from him??
After reading Treason, does anyone have a list of who he named when he was before the committee?

You can bet that at the Streisand and Saradon residences there is the clinking of champagne glasses as we speak.
