I agree with you two .
It is fun to be nice to someone who deserves it, and there are enough nasty SOBS out there already.
I have worked with "the public" on several occaisons and while most of them are decent, many of them are a pain in the butt and will never be happy no matter what you do.
I was never in a "tipping" industry, but I valued a smile and a "thank you" from a happy customer and I try hard now to be appreciative to people who wait on me.

It's rare that I encounter someone so bad that I don't think they deserve a tip. In fact, someone that bad deserves to be complained about to the manager. Otherwise, decent tips for all, better tips for good service, or just when I am feeling jolly, which is hopefully as often as possible. Of course, I don't dine out that often, so it's not like I'm going broke from tipping. It just feels good to leave a little extra on the table, beyond what's expected. I don't go to church, so maybe it's my way of giving "tidings", if that's the right word for it. It's my pleasure. There must be better things to get cranky about than tipping.
