Freeper Tech Help Needed--internet
Boris | 09-27-03 | Boris

I'm a Roadrunner user. All of a sudden I cannot reach certain domains. For example, I cannot access google(!) I can ping it at 216.239.57.99 or at www.google.com. Tracert shows time-outs at hop 13.

I cannot ping lerc.nasa.gov (128.156.10.12) (timeouts)--but IE can get there with no problems (unlike last night).

Tracert to www.jetico.com [62.142.11.131] works, but the site cannot be accessed from my browser.

Tracert to to www.grc.com [204.1.226.226] fails with time-outs.

Tracert to www.iwon.com [208.45.133.25] fails with a very interesting message: 15 * iwon-gw.customer.alter.net [157.130.91.82] reports: Destination net unreachable.

So far the RR tech support has been no help at all. Note that I can reach FR and many other websites. Domains 204 and 208 seem especially bad and last night 128 was completely unreachable but today seems "better".

I am at my wits' end. BTW, this all seemed to start when I took somebody's advice here and ran Gibson Research's "DCOMBOBULATOR" to turn off port 135. RR told me they already block it so there was no need. Ironic that now I can no longer reach Gibson Research!

Any suggestions?

So you are back for more advice? LOL! Maybe you blocked port 80?

Is TCP/IP manually configured, or do you get your parameters via DHCP? If the former, check your DNS to see if you're getting name resolution on all domains. If you know the IP address, try substituting it for the parent domain in the URL and see if that works.

possibly -- probably -- unrelated, but rr has been doing some pretty flaky stuff lately. for instance, i was working on a project with someone who has a rr address -- and all of a sudden my email to her stopped getting through. checked my bounce logs, and they've blocked everything coming from charter residential address space. i have to bounce my mail off the mail server at my hosting company. this without them informing anyone. of course, if security were their concern, they'd simply not allow windows machines on their network at all, and the problem would disappear.

Well, your first problem is using Gibson's website for assistance. That guy is pretty much a complete dumbass.

Keep in mind that computers and firewalls can be configured to drop ICMP, so your pings/traceroutes would die no matter what. For what it is worth, my traceroute is timing out to dumbass Gibson's website:

Nope; at least not intentionally.

Did you turn on your monitor? I had that problem once. Also had a problem with my foot switch but then someone told me you use it with your hand. I kept stomping on it and it did nothing. Figured that was why they called it a mouse. Who the heck would figure you hold a mouse in your hand. Must be a PETA thing.

Anyhow, if that is not it, write back and I will see if I can help more. There is something I just saw called a regedit. Going to see about that now.

TCP/IP on RR is automatic. I cannot reach, e.g., google via either the URL or its IP.

Are there any internet sites you can get to?

What happens when you try to go to Google?

netmilsmom taps netmilsdad on the shoulder:

"I can ping it at 216.239.57.99 or at www.google.com. Tracert shows time-outs at hop 13."

dns works

"Tracert to to www.grc.com [204.1.226.226] fails with time-outs."

I would not completely trust tracert, new router protocols occassionally block it (my experience anyway)

I have to ask the standard windows question:
did you reboot yet?

also from Gibson Research:
The DCOMbobulator supports three command line options which can be useful for operation from corporate logon scripts or batch command files:

DCOMbob disable

DCOMbob enable

DCOMbob verify

I would open a command prompt and type:
"DCOMbob disable"

If you had active DCOM sessions a reboot will probably be neccessary.

Just went to the GRC site and saw the DCOMbobulator link. Very glad you posted of the trouble you had with or I might have tried it.

Hope you get the problem solved. I am sure there are some on here that can help you. Very smart people here.

Sounds like you have some insidious spyware. There's a lot of it going around lately.

Download Spybot search and destroy and run it, it should help.
