MOUNTLAKE TERRACE, Wash. Dozens of chickens were rescued, but dozens more put down. Police raided two locations in Mountlake Terrace after accusations of an illegal cockfighting ring.
The roosters and hens were found in the backyards of two separate homes about one hundred birds in all.
An animal rescue group on the scene said there were telltale signs the roosters were raised for cockfighting. They're housed in wooden teepees to separate them from the other birds.
They raise them in tight quarters where they are encouraged to fight. They cut their spurs off and replace them with razor blades so they can fight and draw blood, said Mark Steinway, Pasados Safe Haven, who was called in to rescue the hens 44 hens were saved, but 55 roosters had to be euthanized.
"It's really a shame because they've taken these really gentle creatures and turned them into fighting machines, said Steinway.
A man living at one of the homes declined to comment.
I've been here for two months, I've never seen a cockfight there, said Rose Gutierrez, who is renting the other home. She said she doesn't know to whom the birds belong, but she doesn't think the property owners are raising them for cockfighting.
Neighbors say the chickens have been being raised there for more than 10 years.
I would never guessed there were that many birds on that property, said one neighbor.
Because cockfighting usually involves betting of some sort, the Gaming Commission may be investigating this case as well.

It's really a shame because they've taken these really gentle creatures and turned them into fighting machines, LOL....throw a few non-fighting roosters in a pen and see how "really gentle" they are.

This is a sick and twisted pastime. The people running, watching, and participating in this activity ought to be euthanized.
It's just a cheap charade version of dog fighting, which, of course, is the sport of kings.mydogkilledyourdog.org

No, wait, those were turkeys. Never mind.
Jokes aside, cockfighting is a sick "sport" and good job to these folks for cracking down on it.

Send them to my house - we'll light the big grill and euthanize'em here. I like a little hickory smoke with my euthanizing.

"It's really a shame because they've taken these normally gentle animals and made them fighting machines." What? He doesn't know squat about Roosters if he really believes this, their brutal birds. Their even violent when they breed, if you don't believe go to one of these chicken farms and watch. It might be a brutal sport and I don't agree with it at all, but chickens are not the peaceful animals that PETA and the chicken rescuers would have you believe. Trust me I live on a Ranch/farm.

I'll second that.
I have had to 'euthanize' a few roosters that got too big for their britches.

Amen
My grandfather had the meanest big White Leghorn,he would cirle and spur you from behind, if you didn't pay attention.
Sent an uncle to the hospital for stiches.

I might add, I used that rooster for a moving target with my Red Ryder.

Mine aren't too bad; they only get a bit riled when trying to breed. Or when there's a hen in a nest where another hen would like to be.
I have one hen that sorta likes to be carried around. She likes to do her own thing away from the other hens.

It truly is a shame when others can pose their will on those of us who wish to raise and fight gamecocks. Can anyone tell me how many chickens are killed daily so you can eat them. They have absolutely no chance of survival as their heads are chopped off by machines. Gamecocks are treated with the up most care for as much as three years fresh water everyday the very best feeds available and are regularly medicated to prevent worms etc. Some live to be as much as 14 years old and love every opportunity to fight with another rooster. I can without hestitation say that i am a third generation breeder of gamefowl and will continue to do so regardless of what laws you attempt to impose on me and my fellow cocker's in Louisiana.
