Associated Press A soldier of the 101st Airborne Division stands near a Humvee destroyed by an explosive in Mosul on Thursday. Eight soldiers were injured in the blast, but their names and units were not released Thursday.
WASHINGTON -- Senate approval Thursday of a $368 billion Defense Department budget should bring a sigh of relief to thousands of Tennessee soldiers and their families who worried about possible pay cuts.

Now if only we could get the gov't to pay 100% of their midtour leave, not just to the shoreline

Thanks for the ping, boxer. Good news. Congress finally thought of the troops first.
Notice how Gannett spins this as if the administration was going to cut pay and Congress stepped in to save the day. Not true.
They never stop, do they?
The spending plan includes $128 million for increases in imminent danger pay and family separation allowances for soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The House passed the measure Wednesday, and President Bush is expected to sign it soon.
Putting our heroes ahead of pork, ping!
If you want on or off my Pro-Coalition ping list, please Freepmail me. Warning: it is a high volume ping list on good days. (Most days are good days).

It certainly got tongues wagging among the families of the troops. I know of more than few who would of walked in to DC and ripped some lungs outs if they took this away. lol dont mess with a military wife or mother

About time.
But you watch the dems in the Senate hold up the $87B.
Next week, on Mon. Frist wants to mark up the bill and bring it to the Floor, the dems want the keep the bill in committee and/or Split the Bill and put the money for the troops through and hold up the money for reconstruction. THIS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN!
Byrd was on the floor last night asking why the bill was being pushed through and whining about going to fast and not having outside witnesses heard at hearings ( he wanted Al Gore and Madeline Albright to take question to name a few.) Then went on about how his Wife is having surgery on Tues. so he wouldn't be there for a full day.
Frist got up and answered him, "BECAUSE WE ARE AT WAR SENATOR."
There was more but I gotta get back to work....

RE Byrd and his day off for his wife's surgery ---
-what about all the soldiers away from their families -- babies being born with fathers who can't be there, wives' having surgery and emergencies their husbands don't even know about.....byrd needs to retire!

While they dont join for the money, the thought of having hazard pay and overseas pay cut while you have bullets flying past your head is not the way to keep folks in the military.

You contradict yourself in above paragraph, "they don't join for the money"... although it may be construed as a cut , it is reverting back to level it was before Congress raised it in April...

Its not a contradiction, not they don't join for the money, meaning they are not going to get rich and retire as millionares, to cut the pay is idiotic as this point in time
