Congress has pulled the plug on a data-mining computer program criticized by privacy advocates as a supersnoop system to spy on American citizens and is closing the Pentagon office that created it.

"The outcome is we are not going to have Americans picked up by their ankles and turned upside down then shaken to see if anything funny falls out," said Sen. Ron Wyden, Oregon Democrat and leading opponent of the office's activities.

Keep your eyes open folks. This was too good to pass up. Things like this have a way of coming back 6 months later under a new name and getting passed in the middle of the night on a voice vote in 15 secs.

Even without sneeking back in the middle of the night to pass a different version of domestic spying legislation, this bill does not stop police from monitoring American citizens.

This bill is just a cover-up to avoid the bad publicity that the Patriot Act has generated. The Homeland Security Department will still monitor American information flow, and "Homeland Security" is not a military organization, but a civilian police force.

"Congress is shutting down (Terrorism Information Awareness), but we are not forgoing the use of technology to sharpen our homeland security efforts and track terrorists here and around the world," (Sen. Ron Wyden) said.
"here and around the world."

In other words, they're still watching us. This legislation is a lie.

Likewise, Poindexter.

Removed, but only from public view.
I guarantee he will continue working for NSA, or someone, in a "classified" projects environment.

HOORAY!

WE WIN...  FOR NOW.

NEXT - REPEAL THE UN-PATRIOT ACT!

But like agitator said, things like this have a way of coming back in a few months, with a different name, in a middle of the night vote.

Dubya and Ashcroft aren't going to give up that easy.  They want absolute control.  You can bet that while we are out there fighting for our Constitutional rights and trying to get the UN-Patriot Act repealed, Dubya and Ashcroft will be sneaking around behind the scenes, coming up with a replacement for that abomination that will be even worse.

Dubya and Ashcroft thought that they could scare the people into giving up their rights and freedoms, as did the Germans, in 1933.  But, this is the USA and we aren't fooled by the politicos that easy (though, I am constantly surprised at how many blind disciples Dubya has on this forum).

The good news is, that's one brick out of Dubya's wall of absolute control.

The bad news is, it's only one brick out of a mighty big wall.

We can't rest.  It will be a long uphill battle.  But this shows that we can succeed, if we never give up fighting for the rights guaranteed us under the Constitution.

But it's still a shame, that at a time like this, in this great country, the people should have to fight their own government, just to maintain their rights and freedoms, guaranteed under the Constitution.  It's an even greater shame, that it's a Republican administration that we have to fight for those rights and freedoms.
