Prominent California Republicans are sharply increasing the pressure on state Sen. Tom McClintock to drop out of the gubernatorial recall election, clearing the field for Arnold Schwarzenegger after a poll showed the actor's performance in Wednesday night's debate was well-received.

"What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?"

Or even California.

The 58 members of the California Republican County Chairmen's Association endorsed Mr. Schwarzenegger yesterday by a 40-9 vote with five abstentions.

All RINOs in the narrowminded view of Tom supporters.

I wonder how many of the sell outs were authorized by a vote of their County Central Committees?

This could get interesting.

"Tom made a promise to me that he, in fact, wouldn't be a spoiler,"Mr. Issa said. "So the pressure is on Tom to decide whether that has become the reality, that he might be becoming a spoiler."

Which promise will Tom keep? I'm confused.

I think McClintock scared the crap out of the establishment California GOP last night.

"I am the only candidate at this table who has signed a no-tax pledge. I am the only candidate at this table who supports Proposition 54 to stop the government from racially classifying every one of us. I'm the only candidate at this table that (opposes) the bill that gives driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. I'm the only candidate at this table who's pro life. I'm the only candidate who supports the entire Bill of Rights, including our Second Amendment. And I'm the only candidate who for 20 years in the public arena has proposed and fought for precisely those fiscal forms that are desperately needed to straighten out this state's finances."
- Tom McClintock (Debate closing statement, 9-24-03)

Tom looked straight into the TV camera and proudly proclaimed exactly where he stands, ie., on the platform of the Republican Party. It is astonishing that the establishment GOP surrender monkeys want McClintock out so that Republicans can vote for somebody with the opposite views. It's weird.

No seriously.

I know McClintock won the debate and he is a TRUE conservative. ( Except for the taking money from foreign Nations part).

But there must be one Republican or Conservative of rank that supports him.

Can anyone think of one?

All I see is MCClintock in a line with: Arriana, Cruz, Davis et all AGAINST Ahonold.

I know McClintock won the debate

To quote the Firesign Theater, "Everything you know is wrong."

he is a TRUE conservative. ( Except for the taking money from foreign Nations part).

A TRUE conservative would back out and help the conservative front-runner demolish Bustamante in the upcoming election. The fact that McClintock is staying in the race in spite of his being incapable of winning and siphoning votes away from Schwarzenegger are big strikes against him ever again being called a "true" conservative. What McClintock is doing is damaging the party and any hope of getting a conservative elected to statewide office, pure and simple. And that's not the act of a "true conservative."

But there must be one Republican or Conservative of rank that supports him. Can anyone think of one?

(crickets ...)

All I see is MCClintock in a line with: Arriana, Cruz, Davis et all AGAINST Ahonold.

You know what they say about lying down with dogs and getting up with fleas ...

Are all republican souless? Are all the conservative leaders souless?

Politics is a dirty business sometimes. Republicans know as I do that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and that even the best of intentions mean nothing if you're incapable of being placed into the position of being able to act upon them.

Let's not bring the hell of Aztlan to California by continuing to indulge Tom McClintock's little temper tantrum against his own party. Its time for him to get a good hard spanking, be put into his bassinet, and have a bottle shoved into his mouth.

McClintock is a good man, but not Thomas More. And Schwarzenegger and his supporters aren't Richard Rich. Most fundamentally, however, voting for a compromise candidate isn't forfeiting one's soul. I looked it up.

It is false to think that the route to salvation lies in politics.

Politics is about choosing the best feasible option among, most likely, several bad ones. There is no point in chasing afutile ideal.

Salvation, both personal and cultural, is not in a ballot box.

Why don't the RINOs "compromise" for a change and vote for Tom?

There's a clear double standard when it comes to compromise, at least insofar as the RINOs are concerned.

Remember how they ran an independent candidate with the sole purpose of causing the defeat of Oliver North?

Simple - because the bulk of the Arnold supporters would not go to McClintock, certainly not enough to give him a victory. Many would go to Bustamante.

McClintock supporters are most unlikely to go to Bustamante, but a substantial fraction would go to Arnold.
