San Francisco blue jeans maker Levi Strauss & Co. said Thursday it would close its remaining North America manufacturing and finishing plants, firing nearly 2,000 employees in the process, or about 11 percent of its global workforce.
The news comes days after the company said it would cut bout 350 salaried jobs in the U.S., with about 300 additional jobs cut in Europe in an effort to reduce costs in the face of reduced product pricing.
In April 2002, Levi Strauss closed six of its eight U.S. manufacturing plants, including its oldest on Valencia Street in San Francisco. The closures pink slipped 3,300 employees, or 20 percent of Levi's worldwide workforce.
The sewing plants closed in three phases and included four in Texas, and one in Georgia.
During that 2002 round of closures, there were 100 layoffs in San Francisco, where Levi had made jeans in its Mission District facility since 1906. The closures were part of Levi's turnaround plan, which involves getting out of manufacturing to focus on marketing. The company has been losing sales and profits for half a decade and has shifted manufacturing to offshore contractors like many of its competitors.
The remaining two U.S. plants were in San Antonio Texas.
You show self for liar. You must make earnings off China. In Russia push for Russian companies first...Russian unemployment lowest of European G-8 members and economy grown more then all other G-8 combined. China, by way, practice Chinese made products ONLY. You want sell in China? You make in China. I think you work for company that make monies on outsourcing....but then you also sound like Texas_hog who never around when you post....hmmmm????
Perhaps then you could balance this out for us by posting news reports of mass-hirings in the US, new factories being opened in the US, production lines being started up (perhaps even brought in from say China or India?), from reputable sources like Forbes, WSJ, Dow Jones, Etc? In fact, lets start with you posting 1 article of a mass hiring (on the same scale as the layoffs) for a US factory and see where that goes. Show us what we've been selectively ignoring.
Well, the unemployement is 6.1% which until very recently was considered minimal possible.
That's only counting the number of people currently collecting UI benefits. Once they fall off the UI roles, they are no longer counted in that statistic, and you must turn to the Household survey data to get a full picture. The rate of total unemployed and underemployed is currently 10.0%:
From the THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION reports I have accumulated table A12 Line U-6 data for May 2003 thru present, not seasonally adjusted.Unemployment (Household Survey Data) Not seasonally adjusted August May June July August 2002 2003 2003 2003 2003 U-6 Total unemployed, plus all marginally attached workers, plus total employed part time for economic reasons, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus all marginally attached workers......................................... 9.5 9.7 10.6 10.5 10.0 1 Data not available. NOTE: Marginally attached workers are persons who currently are neither working nor looking for work but indicate that they want and are available for a job and have looked for work sometime in the recent past. Discouraged workers, a subset of the marginally attached, have given a job-market related reason for not currently looking for a job. Persons employed part time for economic reasons are those who want and are available for full-time work but have had to settle for a part-time schedule. For further information, see "BLS introduces new range of alternative unemployment measures," in the October 1995 issue of the Monthly Labor Review. Beginning in January 2003, data reflect revised population controls used in the household survey.
Shoot! My butt looks better in Levis.
I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. So, I have adjusted my shopping accordingly .... If a store doesn't have my size jeans that fit ... I shop elsewhere...
But, seriously ... I have noticed a 2 inch variation in the waist measurements, and about a 1.5 inch variation in the length in the same brand, color and style of jeans; from the same rack. And I wonder, how can you mass produce anything with this much variation; and then claim you are producing efficiently? It seems like they just make pants, then sort the day's production into an arbitrary size range.
And I told you in the previous post that they are workers ---- highly paid but workers --- and there is nothing privileged about them. GO buy a book before you continue to defame hard-working, honest peope!
What the h-ll does the "fund manager" has to do with jobs?
It scares me that you vote.
It's time to wake up, Dentist: we've overcome the recession.
So do you suggest that American companies do not have foreign subsidiaries? No jobs oversees?
What's interesting here is the NRA gives to Democrats. In fact, they have even donated to dems who are part of the Progressive Caucus- a blatantly socialist organization within Congress. The NRA's only concern is gun laws. But they give money to candidates who are heavily pro-union (among other things) as long as they perceive that person's gun views being in line with their own. The unions harm business. People lose their jobs.
This is the problem with being a 'single issue' voter or lobby group. You will eventually wind up in bed with people or other groups who are actually the antithesis of what you're all about.
That, in general, sounds fine. Except the country is doing fine: we have 6.1% unemployment, very close to what was considered minimal possible. This means people have plenty of food in their mouths.
Envy (on the side of the poorer) and greed (on the side of the richer) plays the role AFTER the necessities are taken care of.
That is a very naive perspective. Take a course in some behavioral sciences. Also, observe people who are well off still b----g about the "unreasonable" salaries of management and the "rich."
About the supposed "ignorance of how the core American institutions work", don't you realise that the free trade policies are a new thing, Firstly, it's not new.
Secondly, that is not what I meant: I was referring to corporations and the roles of owners, managemet, and labor. By itself, it's only a small problem, but ignorance have been replaced by misunderstanding that reads like a Marxist textbook.
Ditto that. My Carhartts last better, anyway. I have been e-mailing to remind them of this every time I buy a new pair.
One addressed these things differently at an individual and at the aggregate level. There is no problem of this kind at the aggregate level.
You comment seems to confound education and skills. If one has reasonable education, one can move to an adjacent field if particular skill becomes unnecessary.
There is continuing education through workshops, minicourses, and courses in universities that are within the field of specialization. One also improves his job-retention chances by taking a foreing language, computer skills, etc. Last but should've been mentioned first is management courses and knowlege in general.
