Ministry executes 37 projects, creates 35,000 jobs

Baghdad, Iraq Press, September 23, 2003 – The Ministry of Public Works is implementing 37 projects in 14 of the country’s 18 provinces, according to Nisrin Mustafa al-Barwari, the minister.

Al-Barwari told Iraq Press that the schemes are to maintain and upgrade existing water purification projects across the country.

Al-Barwari assumed her post on September 1 when the interim Governing Council announced the first post-Saddam cabinet.

She is the only women in the 25- member cabinet. A Kurd with a Ph.D. in development and reconstruction, she contributed a lot to the reconstruction of the autonomous Kurdish region in the north.

She said her ministry was poised to shoulder "a pioneering role" in the post-war reconstruction of the country.

The projects, she said, are financed by the funds allocated to her as part of the 2003 budget which also included the spending 32 million dollars which have created 35,000 new jobs.

She said her ministry is one of the biggest employers in the country with 450,000 employees.

Al-Barwari said she foresees a bright future for Iraq when funds start pouring into the country.

She said her ministry will obtain "a fair share" of the 20 billion dollars the United States has allocated to reconstructing Iraq in 2004.

"That year (2004) I expect to see dramatic improvement in public services and utilities," she said.

The Dimocraps are not going to like this news. Ted Kennedy will make sure there's no $20 million "bribe" or $87 million for Iraq. How would more success look for the 2004 election?

Ministry executes 37 projects,

Please don't use the word "executes" in Iraq. Thank you.

More good news that we're unlikely to hear on the evening news. Doesn't fit the "quagmire . . . poorly planned" theme.

Correction, I think. There is more than one woman on the Council:

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - The health of Aquila al-Hashimi, one of three women on Iraq's Governing Council, has taken a turn for the worse....She served in the Foreign Ministry during the Saddam government and was the only official of the ousted regime appointed to the 25-member Governing Council. <> http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/988288/posts
