Boris Berezovsky and other Kremlin critics took out a full-page advertisement in major U.S. newspapers on Tuesday warning the United States not to trust President Vladimir Putin.
The advertisement in The Washington Post, New York Times and Wall Street Journal was clearly designed to embarrass Putin as he headed for the United States to attend the UN General Assembly and a summit with U.S. President George W. Bush.
Titled "Seven questions to President George Bush about his friend President Vladimir Putin," it accused Putin of undermining democracy, stamping his control on parliament, courts and media, and overseeing genocide in Chechnya.
"Any person is free to choose his friends. But friendship is based on shared values," the advertisement said. It also appeared in at least three British newspapers.
Berezovsky, a wealthy businessman who lives in London, said he had spent about $1 million on the advertisements, which he said had two aims.
"One is to point out to the American president that there are people in Russia who understand that the current regime has committed crimes," he said by telephone. "President Putin should also understand that these crimes will not go unpunished, that not everyone has a short memory, that he has to answer for them."
The Kremlin declined to comment on the advertisements.
The advertisement's four other signatories included Yelena Bonner, widow of the late Soviet dissident and Nobel laureate Andrei Sakharov, and Ruslan Khasbulatov, former speaker of the Russian parliament

Translation from Rooters-- Berezovsky, a wealthy businessman criminal who livesfont color="red">who bought political asylum to run from prosecution for crimes in London, said he had spent about $1 million on the advertisements, which he said had two aims. he said by telephone. "President Putin should also understand that these crimes will not go unpunished, that not everyone has a short memory, that he has to answer for them."
We could say same for criminal who helped prolong first Chechin war, bribed generals to make mistakes, destroyed industries by pillage sending whole towns to bankruptcy. Bribed top government officials, held illegal monopolies, destroyed free business, impoverished home country, embezzeld funds, laundered stolen monies, and formerly called self "king-maker".
Guess Ken Lay (?sp) should go to Russia and post commercials against Bush...Sores loves both.

In any case, I am pretty sure Berezovsky supported Putin in his election and even put up some serious money to see that he wins...
