Berezovsky Takes Out $1M Ads

Boris Berezovsky and other Kremlin critics took out a full-page advertisement in major U.S. newspapers on Tuesday warning the United States not to trust President Vladimir Putin.

The advertisement in The Washington Post, New York Times and Wall Street Journal was clearly designed to embarrass Putin as he headed for the United States to attend the UN General Assembly and a summit with U.S. President George W. Bush.

Titled "Seven questions to President George Bush about his friend President Vladimir Putin," it accused Putin of undermining democracy, stamping his control on parliament, courts and media, and overseeing genocide in Chechnya.

"Any person is free to choose his friends. But friendship is based on shared values," the advertisement said. It also appeared in at least three British newspapers.

Berezovsky, a wealthy businessman who lives in London, said he had spent about $1 million on the advertisements, which he said had two aims.

"One is to point out to the American president that there are people in Russia who understand that the current regime has committed crimes," he said by telephone. "President Putin should also understand that these crimes will not go unpunished, that not everyone has a short memory, that he has to answer for them."

The Kremlin declined to comment on the advertisements.

Really? I didn't know. We have NTV International here in New York. I never watch except for Banditski Peterburg (which I thought was pretty good)and an occasional movie (very rarely).
