They would come from all spheres of success, gathering whenever the tie that binds them was -- or was in danger of -- being demeaned. They are corporate executives, artists, politicians, writers and moguls, and all attended one of the nation's nearly 100 public and private historically black colleges and universities. You've heard of some of them: Oprah Winfrey (Tennessee State) and Vernon Jordan (law degree from Howard), Branford Marsalis (Southern) and director Spike Lee (Morehouse), writer Alice Walker (Spelman) and poet Nikki Giovanni (Fisk).

All the huff about any spot he may seek in the N.F.L. depends upon his being able to prove that he can play football
He has to prove that before getting into the N.F.L.; it's a requirement.
He is largely an unknown quantity and probably needs this year off from sports, because of his injuries last year.
The N.F.L. is smart to say, "No!" to Maurice, because to let him in otherwise, is to open them up to his suing them "because they should have known better" ... when his injuries turn out to have not healed.
Perhaps Maurice should go to Grambling, to study. Spend the next three years doing that and strengthening his framework. Then do a walk-on at an N.F.L. camp.
His chances are better, doing that, then skipping school, now.
That is, if he want's a future, and the people around him will let him work for it.
Self-determination is what will get him where he wants to go, not lawyers, not in this case.
Regarding, however, the other topic above, about segregation and "black" colleges. These institutions are reeling because of "political correctness" --- it is not what parents want for their kids, the ridiculous leftists' notions of having "affirmative action" and "separate but equal" at the same time, that these colleges are forced to carry by The [formerly Democrat] Party.
Who is going to spend a fortune to send their son or daughter to a school that is indoctrinating its students with socialist mysticisms of no practical use other than to know how to chant The Party lines at "protests?"
No thanks.
The source of the troubles for "black" colleges, is The [formerly Democrat] Party.
These schools should at last, at least, free themselves from that; and, don't expect the Republican Party to have any answers either.
College should be about truth, knowing more of it, instead of learning how to read and write about what will make you popular with Lenin or Stalin at the next sit-in or other such assemblies for the purpose of avoiding individual responsibilities.
He deserves what he's gonna get.
