SACRAMENTO - Indian tribes have eclipsed organized labor to become the top campaign giver in the recall election.
The more than $3.24 million donated by Indian tribes to Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante has caused the most stir. But records show the tribes are now also spreading their wealth to his political opposite, Sen. Tom McClintock, as well as contributing $2 million to an independent committee.
There are legal questions over how Bustamante can spend the tribal donations as he campaigns to succeed Gov. Gray Davis if the governor is recalled.
The tribes have given more than $100,000 to McClintock, R-Thousand Oaks. And they've contributed $2 million to an independent expenditure committee, with $100,000 going to support Bustamante, state campaign records show.
Tribes' contributions to Bustamante prompted complaints this week from Proposition 54 author Ward Connerly that politicians might soon find themselves simply asking tribes how the state should be run. Bustamante's tribal contributions are going to television ads opposing Connerly's proposition, which would bar the state from classifying people by race, ethnicity or national origin.

Arnold won't accept money from Indian tribes, but has no problem taking camapign donations from any number of special interests.

Save OUR Recall Election from the 9th Circus Court of Meddlers!!!
A local small business owner from Melanie Morgan Hill, the initiator, will be there with sign in hand.
Please come out & show your fellow California citizens how you feel about a Federal Court meddling in a state election.
If punch card ballots were good enough to elect the bum, Why are they not good enough to toss da bum out?
Creativity as always is greatly appreciated.
See you there!!! Thanks!
This is EXACTLY the plot of the John Ritter movie/satire in 1978 called "Americathon" that ridiculed Jimmy Carter's inept stagflation and energy crisis. Classic!!! (with the national debt owed entirely to a tribal chieftan who sponsored a telethon to retire it with Ritter playing Jerry Lewis)
I am unhappy over Tom accepting these contributions, but I guess he'll need 'em if the election is postponed by Dem "judges!"
Keep the conservative pundits and self-styled experts busy arguing the Bustamante-Arnold-McClintock issue. Beat that ol' dead horse.
While Davis waltzes away from a recall.
Morons.
I have not heard the word "recall" once on conservative talk radio for a few days now.
Hello? Any other discussions are irrelevant if the recall fails.
D'OH!
Republican get bashed over the head for supporting the 2nt amendment because the NRA donates... the left then implies where being bought by the Gun Lobby
Manny Frepper where against the antitrust action on Microsoft on principal I dont think it implies there where being bought by Microsoft.
The major thing I look for is if a position moves to follow the money Tom has had the same position on the tribes for 20 years... poor or rich ..Tom's stand ..they were given the reservation land and promise it was there own nation so leave them alone... I think any true conservatives would whole heartily support that stand
Conversely I still have a very bad feeling about Arnold and Buffet.... I think Warren is in there to protect his interest... and screw us and the state.... we still need to know more about Warren, energy companies and what interests they might have in California.... the energy contracts are the big graft issue in California
ExPect a major barrage on Davi$ the last few days before the election, if it doesn't get delayed, that IS.
Because this "tribal" money is most likely coming from Nevada.
Were this true, and it were the x-tremes which were doing the donating, I think its wonderful. I would like for them to contribute more and more and more and more and deplete all of their expendible income on a wasted cause. Then maybe they might not be able to pollute the next election process so badly.
Nice try. I don't suppose the fact that the CA Republican Party fell flat on its face on this matters either. You really hate Tom, don't you? Keep it up. Your boy, Arnold , if and when he wins will not be the bearer of anything pleasant eitehr, but you won't go there. It's called reality. Try it sometime.
At least Tom, was willing to put his head on the block.
What promises is Arnold making that he will also fail to act on or deliver on?
This, of course, did not happen and the car tax is here. Can you name the individual who made these claims? And why should we believe this guy now?
The following statement seems to have disappeared from his site. Thanks to Google it was saved.
Ah you may want to check your fact on what happen on the stop the car tax by referendum... The dems pulled a unique stunt to block a referendum .. and Tom team got redirect in to the recall..... Where was Arnold?

Assembly Says Car Fee Must Go Up for Budget to Go Down
Date: January 29, 2003
By Evan Halper
Times Staff Writer
SACRAMENTO -- The Assembly voted Tuesday to cut $3.5 billion from the state budget adopted in September, but only if Gov. Gray Davis agrees to an increase in the license fee on most motor vehicles.
Rather than their earlier plan to triple the vehicle license fee across the board, Democrats proposed -- and the Assembly approved -- applying the increase only to vehicles worth more than $5,000.
The Democrats argued that the change means they are proposing to impose a "levy" -- not a fee -- which under state law cannot be reversed by referendum.
The move set off a furor among Republicans. "This is a gimmick," said Assemblyman Guy Houston (R-Livermore). "It is not about exempting the poor. It is about exempting the voters."

Republicans rebuffed in budget battle
Assembly passes car-tax hike and prevents voters overturning it
By DAVID M. DRUCKER, STAFF WRITER
SACRAMENTO - Tuesday was an exercise in futility for Inland Valley Republicans, who watched Assembly Democrats attach spending cuts to a $4 billion car-tax hike and pass it in a way that prevents voters from overturning it by referendum.

The Battle of the Recall: Read How it Began.....
For the Republicans, the car tax is an issue that stimulates images of a ready militia. Under the direction of Col. (Sen.) Tom McClintock, over 5,000 citizens (The State of California Tax Militia) volunteered to operate the gathering of signatures for a referendum on the car tax. Over 5,000 volunteers in less than a week with only talk radio as the outletmakes one wonder what will happen when talk radio is afforded 160 days to encourage 890,000 signatures for a recall. I'm sure it makes the governor wonder too!
