US pays $10m for Hambali

Hambali is being interrogated in US custody

The United States has paid Thailand $10m for its part in the arrest of Indonesian terror-suspect Hambali. Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said the money had arrived and he would decide which police officers and other causes would share the reward.

Hambali, who was arrested in August north of the Thai capital Bangkok, is now being interrogated by the US.

He is thought to be a key figure in the Asian group Jemaah Islamiah, and its link with Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaeda.

The Thai prime minister said some of the money would be paid to Special Branch Police and local police who helped in the arrest, which is thought to have been orchestrated by the CIA.

"The US Government has already given us US$10m for help in the arrest of Hambali, and we will allocate this fairly to the agencies concerned," he said.

Hambali, an Indonesian whose real name is Riduan Isamuddin, was detained while apparently planning to carry out an attack on a meeting of world leaders in Bangkok in October.

It is not known where he is being held, but several countries have expressed an interest in interviewing him in connection with suspected JI attacks across the region.

JI, which was set up in the mid-1980s by two Indonesian clerics, wants to establish an Islamic state across Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and parts of the Philippines.
