US is holding 10 000 prisoners in Iraq

September 17 2003 at 10:53AM

United States officials say they are holding 10 000 prisoners in Iraq, nearly double the number previously reported. And among the security cases are six inmates claiming to be Americans and two who say they are British.

About 4 400 were classified as security detainees, including about 3 800 who did not previously "fit into any category", said Brigadier-General Janis Karpinski.

Previous figures given by the US military had put the total number of prisoners at between 5 000 and 5 500.

"We got an order from the secretary of defence (Donald Rumsfeld) to categorise" the 3 800, said Karpinski.

'They have fewer rights than enemy prisoners of war' Several hundred third-country nationals were among the prisoners held since Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was overthrown in April by US-led forces, she said.

"Six are claiming to be Americans and two are claiming to be from the UK," she said.

Investigators were determining if these claims are true.

The 3 800 newly categorised prisoners were being held in north-central Iraq, an area controlled by the US Army's Fourth Infantry Division, she said.

Asked if they had any rights or access to their families or legal help, Karpinski said: "It's not that they don't have rights... They have fewer rights than enemy prisoners of war." - Sapa-AFP

According to FNC this morning, the military states they are not Americans or Brits, but simply those trying to get better treatment (from the mean ol' Americans) by claiming to be so. Maybe they fancy a vacation at Gitmo.

10,000 prisoners? Well, by golly, we've got to airlift 10,000 lawyers in there immediately to make sure the constitutional rights of these individuals are fully protected. Where is the ACLU on this?

Certainly there were plenty of prisons to put them into, considering that practically all the old jails that Saddam Hussein had been opened with the advance of the coalition troops, and the children and women had been freed. There were not all that many adult male prisoners to be released from Saddam's jails, as most of them had been executed and buried in anonymous graves, at least those who had not been fed through the wood chippers or dipped in acid vats.

In order to bring order in a war and sanctions ravaged country, US will have to act even more brutal than Saddam - how ironic!

You have a future in comedy. Oh. I forgot there's no more East Germany.

"Thats more prisoners and mass detentions than Saddam ever had. At least in Sadaam's rule, people had electricity and water. I am not sure if Iraqi people are better off under US occupation."

Have a little laughing gas. Saddam kept few prisoners, he just summarily executed many thousands. And if you'll look, the power is on and the water is flowing.

But you can bet we arn't raping women at random, forcing our political prisoners feet-first into plastic shreaders, imprisoning five-year-old who won't swear allegience to Saddam, killing our own citizens with poison gas, and slitting people's ears off. Isn't that enough for you? How about rooting for our side for once? Jeez!

I am not sure if Iraqi people are better off under US occupation.

DISCLAIMER FOR OUTSIDERS AND DU MEMBERS: The following is a literary paragraph, and does not imply or constitute actual bodily threat...it us used for explaination only.

OK, lets personalize it. If you had relatives disappear in the dead of night, gassed, cut, & shredded; if you were persecuted and denied employment (or life) because of your religion, or even because of who your relatives were, if you had to watch your children dipped in acid, or tortured, or they you...do you think this stuff would be better if it didn't happen to you? You've got your answer. Yes, Mr. Confused, certainly they are better off. Wake up and smell the goat cheese!

Clue...Mr. Halflion. Mr. Haaflion...Clue.

Hello?

Sound of crickets chirping, and utter silence.

Hello?

Trace this guy's posts (halfloin - I mean halflion). There's only a handful, and they all show him to be a troll.
