WASHINGTON - With America needing all the help it can get in Iraq (news - web sites), it's time to swallow our pride and give the French back their fries, a House lawmaker said in a letter to her colleagues.

House Republican leaders last March, angered by French opposition to U.S. plans to take military action against Iraq, ordered that all restaurants in the House replace the french fries on their menus with "freedom fries." But now, said Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (news, bio, voting record), D-Texas, we need to bring the French back to the table.

"President Bush (news - web sites) is now urging that all parties put aside 'past bickering.' Delays in rebuilding international good will are costing Americans lives in Iraq, and billions of dollars to the American taxpayers," Lee wrote last week in a letter first reported by the congressional newspaper Roll Call. "A symbolic start to that effort would be reinstating foods in the House cafeterias and dining halls and their traditional 'American' names — french toast and french fries."

>>>>I guess this means I'll have to rename my morning freedom muffins, as well.<<<<

You could start to eat English muffins. We [the English, at least the right thinking ones] are right behind you on Iraq and the rest of the War on Terror, even with our loony-liberal Prime Minister.

I totally agree it will make us Brits feel at home there!
Besides if the Americans do go back to the old crap way of calling them 'French Fries', when I go to New York in November I will go in to every fast foodor resturant and write on the menus 'chips' or 'Freedom Fires'!

No doubt she will weigh in shortly on the name change of Hartsfield Airport to Maynard Jackson Airport.

My, that's so clever--if you're in the third grade.

Have we really fallen so far as a nation, that this is what is meant by "American Pride"?

--Gee, what does that say about the House Republican leadership who thought that it was a valuable use of their time to change the name of french fries in the first place?--

Silly but funny.

"...I'm ashamed Queen Sheila is from Texas!"

Careful what you say. People may refuse to buy your records!
