Boazman: Put Hartsfield on terminal; Councilman would then name airport for Jackson
Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | 9.16.03 | ERNIE SUGGS

Instead of putting former Mayor Maynard Jackson's name on a new airport terminal, an Atlanta city councilman wants former Mayor William Hartsfield's name on it.

Jackson's name then would replace Hartsfield's on Atlanta's main airport -- a suggestion that already has been given a cold shoulder by a special commission that will advise the City Council on mayoral honors this Friday.

As the special advisory commission prepares to recommend that the council name the new $982 million international terminal for Jackson, Councilman Derrick Boazman on Monday introduced three proposals of his own:

One calls for renaming Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport the "Maynard H. Jackson International Airport."

Another calls for placing the Hartsfield name on the international terminal, which will be completed in 2006.

The third calls for erecting statues for both former mayors at the airport.

"Maynard Jackson's life, works and what he sacrificed is worthy of the highest honor we can give him," said Boazman. Among other things, supporters cite Jackson's work to open businesses for minorities at the airport.

But supporters of the airport's current name point to Hartsfield's contributions toward the early growth of the facility.

Dale Hartsfield, a distant cousin of the city's longest-serving mayor, said the family has been hurt by the ongoing debate about removing the Hartsfield name, which has been on the airport for more than 30 years.

"One thing that I have been upset about is Atlanta seems to honor people, then take it away from them," Dale Hartsfield said. "To take his [Hartsfield's] name would be disgraceful."

Valerie Jackson, the widow and an early vocal proponent of renaming the airport for her late husband, would not comment on the latest developments.

Council members C.T. Martin, Natalyn Archibong and Ivory Young, cosigned Boazman's paper.

Eight of 15 council votes are needed to change the airport's name.

Idiot city councilman wants to change name of airport to honor Maynard Jackson and put William Hartsfield's name on the new international terminal.

The committee appointed to come up with a "proper" way to honor Jackson came up with the opposite.

    Points of Fact:
  1. There are 70 airports in the United States involving the word "Jackson".
  2. There is only one airport in the United States involving the word "Hartsfield".
  3. Do you really want your luggage (or yourself) sent to the wrong airport?

Good point by reg45. Passengers flying up from certain precincts in Florida will think they have landed in Mississippi.

As long as it keeps going by the code ATL, and I get to my next plane, I don't care what it's called!

All I did was go to AirNav.com and search for "Jackson" and for "Hartsfield". I figured on getting Jackson, MS; Jackson, MI and Jackson Hole, WY -- Wow! I got seventy "Jackson's", including many I had never heard of before. My search for "Hartsfield" went directly to the Atlanta, GA airport -- no confusion. No if's, No maybe's.

Yes, "ATL" or "KATL" will get you there, but "Jackson" could send you to the "Jackson Seaplane Base" in Crystal Lake, Illinois. Even "Atlanta" has 29 references including three airfields in Atlanta, Idaho. There is, however, ONLY ONE HARTSFIELD, just as there is only one "O'Hare" (Chicago, IL).

Hell, why don't we just change the name of the city to Jacksonville? It would be confusing at first but since we don't have a beach people would soon figure it out.

That is correct, but I think they're working on a seperate drive-up entrance for E, so having Jackson's name on it would be much more prominent and noticeable than it would be now.

I believe that once an airport, street, or other Government entity is named, it should forever hold that name. The waste of taxpayers money just to change the name of the airport would be in the millions. That doesn't include the Huge uneeded cost to private bussiness either. There will always be new buildings and streets that can named to honor the death of our state dignitaries, who cares if they helped build or redesign it. 20 - 30 Years from now people won't even remember Maynard Jackson, much less care. A name is just a name. Jimmy Carter didn't even deserve something named for him and he's still alive. Just say NO to renaming the airport.
