GOP insider looks for palatable budget cuts -- Economist prepares plans for Schwarzenegger

Arnold Schwarzenegger's top fiscal adviser says he is drawing up several budget options that would avoid new taxes while imposing spending cuts that he insists won't cause widespread hardship.

John Cogan, the conservative Stanford University economist who also drafted George W. Bush's tax cut proposal during the 2000 presidential campaign, said in an interview that the cutbacks needed to wipe out California's budget deficit would still leave spending significantly higher than in 1999.

Cogan has drawn the critical job of overseeing the budget planning process and turning the candidate's anti-tax pledge into real policy. Backing him up are Shultz and former White House economic adviser Michael Boskin, another Hoover fellow, as well as advisers from other conservative think tanks.

To hear other Freepers putting words into Arnold's mouth, I thought Arnold was going to raise taxes. And this revelation that Arnold has brought together a team of conservative economic advisors is a real shocker, because to hear it from some Freepers, the only one Arnold listens to is Warren Buffett....

One of the things I like about Arnold is he is willing to listen to people. He knows he is not the savior of CA, but rather one of the key people to put the state back on track.

John Cogan, the conservative Stanford University economist who also drafted George W. Bush's tax cut proposal during the 2000 presidential campaign,

There goes the TomBot argument (weak as it was) that Arnold is conspiring with Warren Buffet to raise California's taxes.

For example, federal law mandates minimum benefit levels for Medi-Cal, the state's low-income health care program.

Hasn't California chosen several options for Medi-Cal that price it well above federal minimum benefit levels? Covering non-emergency medical care for illegals is only part of what could be cut there.

Isn't it amazing our so-called "true" conservative McClintock Freepers have outright lied about what Arnold has had to say? Doesn't say too much about them for putting words in his mouth to start problems on here and tout their candidate by tearing down a fellow Republican. Wonder what they "true" agenda is -- could they be disruptors and Freepers that want to see Bustamante elected?

Do you realize that there are probably more RINO's now on FR then "true" conservatives whatever that means?

Personally I really like my fellow RINO's on here! Who would have thought that lifelong Republican conservatives would be called RINO's. Finally decided to quit getting irritated and take it for a joke from the "if you don't support my candidate, then I am going to stay home or vote for the DemocRAT to teach you all a lesson crowd!"

I'm learning to embrace my inner RINO. I learned that it actually stands for Republican In Name and by Oath.
