Pit Bulls Maul 2-Year-Old Boy

Officials Say Attack Was Vicious

POSTED: 9:50 PM PDT September 12, 2003

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A 2-year-old boy was nearly killed Friday after being mauled by two pit bulls.

Neighbors found 2-year-old Issac Zavaleta inside this home alone, being attacked by the dogs early Friday morning.

They say they're shocked not only that it happened, but that the mother, identified as Vanessa Cruz, left the baby there with the dogs while she reportedly took her boyfriend to work.

At about 7 a.m., a neighbor went to the house to find the two dogs -- named Cane and Sane -- chewing on the boy's head.

The boy underwent surgery at Kern Medical Center earlier Friday before being transferred to Valley Children's Hospital in Madera.

The man who discovered the attack took the boy and gave him to another neighbor, Rosalia Martinez. Blood spots mark the spot where she held him until paramedics arrived.

"I didn't see any injuries in his body," Martinez said. "(But his) scalp (was) pulled back."

Neighbors say the mother arrived after the ambulance and was questioned by sheriff's detectives. Neighbors, many of whom know little Issac, are devastated.

"I was crying," said neighbor Sophia Padilla. "I have a 2-year-old."

The pit bulls are now at animal control. They will be tested for rabies, then destroyed. Animal control officials say they rarely see a dog attack this vicious.

Oh man. This is not the same as the perents stepping outside to smoke a cogarette. She LEFT her 2 year old sone home ALONE. With a pit bull, no less.

How many of us would have left a toddler home alone to begin with?? With or without a pit bull??

And of course, the pit bulls will pay for what is most likely their conditioning by the boyfriend while he gets off scot-free.

Exactly, how hard would it have been for her to put the child in the car? I would not leave any kid under the age of 12 home alone. The idiocy of some parents boggles the mind. I am not sure who is worse, those that leave their kids at home...or those that "forget" they left them in the car!!!!

Parents this neglectful should be spayed and neutered. The mother in this article has absolutely no business having more kids.

Well It seems to me that the kid would of been better off in the front seat of the car with his mom, then home serving as a snack...

I think that all the do-gooders have a little responsibility here -- they make it a chore to take a quick trip. Think about the kids left to bake strapped in the back of the car. Tell me someone is going to forget a kid in the front seat. (I am not talking about the brain dead scum who deliberately leave their kids in the car.)

I don't get it either. I cannot conveive of anyone who didn't think enough of their child's wellbeing that they couldn't take the few minutes necessary to put him in his car seat. I never left mine alone when they were younger than 12 either. My mother never left any of US home alone until we were at least 12. That's partly what neighbors and relatives are for.

Even if the poor baby hadn't been mauled to death by the family dog, we still might be here discussing this hideous lack of caring on the mother's part for some OTHER reason, like a burglar, house fire or him getting out into the street and being hit by a car.

Gee, did you doctor that photo yourself? How many of those pictures do you have on your hard drive? Do they have some special meaning for you? We at FR might use you as an example of someone who is "extreme."
