US soldiers injured in Baghdad
14/09/2003 08:29 - (SA) Baghdad - Five US soldiers were injured, one seriously, when their convoy entered the hotspot town of Fallujah west of Baghdad on Sunday and was attacked with an "improvised explosive device" (IED), witnesses said.
A helicopter attempted to land to medivac the wounded to a nearby hospital after the blast, but was turned back after it was targetted by a rocket, one witness said.
An AFP correspondent reported seeing one of the wounded soldiers carried out of the area by other troops after the attack which the witnesses said occurred at 06:15 at the entrance to Fallujah.
The blast followed the funeral of nine Iraqi security personnel in Fallujah who died in a "friendly fire" tragedy involving US troops.
Following Saturday's funeral, anti-US forces in Fallujah, 50 kilometres west of Baghdad, swore to avenge them.
A group of masked men carrying RPGs and describing themselves as anti-US resistance forces spoke briefly to reporters, reciting verses from the Koran before issuing a chilling warning.
"We will conduct an operation tonight to avenge the martyrs," one said.
A spokesperson for the US military in Baghdad said she could not immediately confirm the attack, but added reports on the strike had been received and were still being checked.
One policeman and eight security guards were also among 12 killed on Friday after US troops opened fire on a highspeed police chase.
The US military has apologised and announced an investigation into the shootings, but there are discrepancies in the accounts of the incident given by the US military and local residents.

This is a nasty tactic and one for which our forces will have to be on the lookout. Maybe they'll have to start escorting those medevac choppers with Apaches.

I saw Slick Willie up there on C-Span with the Rat candidates yesterday.
It was sickening.
I cannot wait to vote for Dubya in 04

The medevac choppers need escorted by Apache or Cobra gunships.

It has been announced, since then, that one US soldier died in an attack, I think it is the same one in this article.

It is sickening.
I post these articles when I find them on Google News because the public has the right to know all curent news items, but I think it is HIGH TIME that our military gets brutal in Iraq.
The IDF used dozers with great success in Jenin.
The dozers needs turned loose in Iraq

"A group of masked men carrying RPGs and describing themselves as anti-US resistance forces spoke briefly to reporters, reciting verses from the Koran before issuing a chilling warning. "
And not one reporter would make a quick call to the US forces to let them know about the group and where they were? Is this more 'objectivity' on the part of the media or don't they care that this 'group of masked men carrying RPGs' were a danger to our forces?
I'll stop, before I compare this to CNN's 12 year history of covering up Iraqi operations to be there..... and be in position to get more stories.

Death rate high in Russian Army
By Stephen Dalziel BBC's Russian affairs analyst
Figures recently released by the Russian Ministry of Defence show that so far this year some 1,200 military personnel have been killed in non-combat circumstances.
Accidents, carelessness, bullying and suicide are cited as the main causes.
The high figure continues a trend which has been occurring in the Russian military for some years.
With a war in Chechnya and peacekeeping operations in Abkhazia and Tajikistan, the Russian Army is not short of recent combat experience.
Suicides among Russian soldiers number around 300 per year
But for at least the fifth year in a row, more Russian servicemen are being killed in non-combat situations than in fighting.
A vivid example was the recent sinking in the Barents Sea of a decommissioned submarine, with the loss of nine lives.
That incident happened because proper safety procedures were not being followed.
It is believed that a hatch was open on the vessel's top deck.
The Russian Defence Minister, Sergei Ivanov, and the President, Vladimir Putin, have constantly criticised the sloppiness which leads to such incidents.
But it seems to have little effect.
There is no reduction, either, in the number of deaths and injuries caused by serious bullying.
Disguising deaths
Official figures acknowledge that so far in 2003, 2,500 servicemen have been the victims of bullying. Sixteen have died.
A further five have been killed by their commanders.
Military observers believe that the real figure may be higher than this. The Russian military has a history of disguising deaths from bullying as accidents, or even suicide.
The officially issued figure for suicides among servicemen has been around 300 a year over the past few years.
While some of these are officers and warrant officers who have become disillusioned with what appears to be the hopelessness of military life, 70% are conscript soldiers in their first year - the most common victims of bullying.
