Candidates Speak On "Armstrong & Getty Show"

POSTED: 12:13 p.m. PDT September 12, 2003 UPDATED: 1:27 p.m. PDT September 12, 2003

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom McClintock had a date of sorts Friday morning.

The hosts of Sacramento talk radio program "The Armstrong and Getty Show" on Talk 650 KSTE arranged a surprise on-air confrontation between the two. McClintock asked Schwarzenegger repeatedly to debate him, and the actor demurred.

McClintock asked: "We've got a Republican convention coming up this weekend, you and I are the two Republican candidates now left in the race, why don't we get together and discuss the major issues of this campaign?"

Schwarzenegger replied that he'd be, in his words, "more than happy" to "get together" with the state senator from Northridge.

McClintock repeated his question: "Can we do that in a debate before the convention Saturday? We're both going to be there."

Schwarzenegger said "No," adding that he would be more than happy to meet with McClintock and discuss issues.

The actor then told McClintock the important thing is to work together on issues. McClintock extended the debate offer a final time and Schwarzenegger signed off by saying, "We will talk about all those things, and we will have a great time at the Republican convention."

A Los Angeles Times poll released late Thursday showed McClintock with support from 18 percent of likely voters to Schwarzenegger's 25 percent. McClintock's support grew 6 percentage points since the August poll, while Schwarzenegger's grew 3 percentage points. Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante was the leading candidate in the poll, with 30 percent.

"The Armstrong & Getty Show" also airs on KQCA-58 TV.

Then, as a good conservative, you would have disapproved of Reagan signing gun control bills, abortion laws, raising taxes, and illegal immigrant amnesty?

Since you are going to be a coward and not explain your cute little remark, I'll tell you exactly what you and your good friends appear to be gossiping about.

I posted a picture of a WTC tower, one that we've seen hundreds of times here at FR.

I posted it in two threads, BOTH TO FRIENDS OF MINE... they were in no way attacks on anyone. Someone complained that they didn't belong in a political discussion and they were pulled.

They are the only posts I've ever seen pulled of mine since I've been here... and they weren't even to anyone I was debating with LOL

OMG! One more time.

STOP TRYING TO CHANGE THE DISCUSSION.

Man oh man, you're one stubborn, narrow minded and shortsighted person.

FYI, I didn't agree with Reagan on every issue. I don't agree with any candidate or politician on every issue. So far, I do agree with McClintock about 90+% of the time. Arnold I agree with about 10% of the time.

Hey Arnold, hear the words I am saying. Continue to be polite to the opponent, and reject any temptation to humiliate debate him in public.

Carry on, sir... glad to have been some help ;-)

I was supposed to become more and more pro-Arnold the more I learned about him. Instead, what little I have learned has led me to support McClintock. Right now I am thinking I will vote for McClintock unless McClintock himself tells his supporters to pull the lever for Arnold. I can't back a politician who is afraid to debate, who won't tell us where he stands on the issues, won't give specific numbers, and won't explain why we should vote for him (other than to say he wants to provide leadership, whatever that means). Hey Arnold, you were the front-runner! You had a chance to "lead," and you blew it!

Apparently we are having two different discussions then...

Do you agree to slam the borders shut?
Do you agree that the government needs to be cut down in size?
Do you believe in no taxes raised except for terrorist attack or a natural disaster?
Do you believe in eliminating onerous regulation strangling businesses?
Do you believe in Workers' Compensation Reform?
Do you believe in rolling back the excessive car tax?
Do you believe the state's books need to be audited to find waste and fraud?
Do you believe in anti-gay marriage?
Do you believe in school prayer?
Do you believe in elimating the 8-hour workday and paid parental leave?
Do you believe in being pro-military, pro-national defense?
Do you believe in self-reliance versus socialism?
Do you believe in stopping the DL's for illegals?
Do you believe in English-Only?
Do you believe in sticking by Prop 13?

Those are quite a few of Arnold's stances.... which are the only 10% you agree with?

>>>Apparently we are having two different discussions then...

Oh really. LOL I think your points in defense of Arnold are very weak. Many of the issues you mention Arnold borrowed from Tom McClintock. Here's the real issues. Read them and weep.

Many people call Arnold Schwarzenegger a moderate Republican. He calls himself, a social liberal and fiscal conservative. There's nothing conservative or moderate about Arnold.

*Arnold doesn't back tax cuts and spending cuts. In fact, he can't even produce his economic recovery plan for California, until after the recall election. The obvious reason for this is simple. Arnold has no economic recovery plan for California.

*Arnold has never indicated support for the basic tenets of fiscal conservatism, tax cuts and spending cuts. Nor has Arnold mentioned anything about supporting supply side economics, or "Reaganomics".

*Arnold doesn't back the pro-life position of the GOP platform. Arnold is pro-abortion and that is in direct opposition to the GOP platform.

*Arnold said to O'Reiily the other night, that he doesn't understand the issue of border security and how it relates to militarizing the borders in an effort to stop illegal immigration and possible terrorists from entering the US.

*Arnold wants more gun control legislation for California.

*Arnold supports special rights for homosexuals.

*Arnold opposes Prop54.

*Arnold hired a BIG-TIME liberal Democrat, to test the waters for increasing California property taxes and promptly got his head handed to him on a silver platter.

*Arnold says, he wants to bring businesses back to California to increase state tax revenues, thereby, getting California out of the red. He says this will improve the states social welfare programs and allow them to recieve the proper funding needed to run more efficiently. Yeah. Give the people what they want. Social welfare entitlements. That's not a conservative talking. That's high minded liberal talk.

*Arnold says, he will get California back on track, without touching the education portion of the state budget. California's education budget is roughly 40% of the entire annual budget. Can't be done.

*Arnold doesn't support oil drilling off the California coast, nor does he support drilling in ANWR either.

*Arnold won't even debate his opponents. He is running from the debates and instead goes on with Bill O'Reilly for a softball interview.

These are Arnold's positions on the issues. They're not in agreement with the conservative agenda of the GOP platform. Arnold is a liberal (RINO) Republican and seemingly, an empty suit to boot.

What a ridiculous mess you handed me, good heavens LOL

And you didn't answer MY question first... which of Arnold's stances do you disagree with? I asked that in direct response to your statement that you only agree with him 10% of the time.

Answer my question first, and I will weed through your "response" of tangled distortions in the morning... yech. Don't answer my question, and I'll happily mark it down that you agree with the list :-)

Night!

it doesn't look like anyone here heard the show...I got it on KNEW in the SF bay area. most callers were saying it was an "ambush" and that they no longer wanted to vote for mcclintock. of course, this is just a small sample...people who were listening, and got through on the phones...

>>>What a ridiculous mess you handed me, good heavens LOL

Stop whining!

I gave you that list on two other occasions. Its clear, precise and concise. You have continually refused to defend Arnold on the real issues of conservatism and those which are found in the GOP party platform.

Instead you want to defend Arnold on some issues unrelated to the recall campaign. Your list of issues, contains many items that Arnold "borrowed" from Tom McClintock's website. There are a few items that all the candidates said they would address if elected governor.

Arnold may support America's national defense, but this isn't an issue facing the candidates in the recall election.

If you don't want to address the issues I've raised, I can understand why.

Good night.

In some ways he much like Ron Paul from Texas. He marches to his on drum and to heck with the rest of the Party.

Oh, Paul *gasp* actually has the audacity to point out when politicians wipe thir a$$ with the Constitution, even if it's a Republican. How dare he.

But he is a "principled" conservative according to his following on here! Never mind he isn't a team player!

Like I said to deport, if calling out anyone, Dem or Repub for wiping their a$$ with the Constitution is "not being a team player", then I wish we had more "non-team players" in Congress.

Good morning :-)

Did you decide to answer my question or do you concede? You said that you only agreed with about 10% of Arnold's positions, well, here are many of them that I responded with to your statement (prior to your return questions). Tell me which 10% you agree with and why you don't agree with the rest...

Do you agree with being anti-union?
Do you agree with pro-religion, going to church weekly?
Do you agree with pro-family, married to the same woman 11 years.
Do you agre with anti-special interest lobbies, such as Indian Reservations.
Do you agree with donating to charity, focused on children and religious-oriented donations?
Do you agree with being pro-Bush and pro-War in Iraq?
Do you believe in standing firm Prop 13?

I even remembered more to add, so now you have a greater selection to pick from :-)

Yes, I'll be known by my actions.

And when I face good families suffering now and even more terribly under Governor Bustamante in 2 years, I'll be proud and open in telling them I supported Arnold. Will you be as quick and open in telling them you proudly voted for McClintock?
