Candidates Speak On "Armstrong & Getty Show"

POSTED: 12:13 p.m. PDT September 12, 2003 UPDATED: 1:27 p.m. PDT September 12, 2003

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom McClintock had a date of sorts Friday morning.

The hosts of Sacramento talk radio program "The Armstrong and Getty Show" on Talk 650 KSTE arranged a surprise on-air confrontation between the two. McClintock asked Schwarzenegger repeatedly to debate him, and the actor demurred.

McClintock asked: "We've got a Republican convention coming up this weekend, you and I are the two Republican candidates now left in the race, why don't we get together and discuss the major issues of this campaign?"

Schwarzenegger replied that he'd be, in his words, "more than happy" to "get together" with the state senator from Northridge.

McClintock repeated his question: "Can we do that in a debate before the convention Saturday? We're both going to be there."

Schwarzenegger said "No," adding that he would be more than happy to meet with McClintock and discuss issues.

The actor then told McClintock the important thing is to work together on issues. McClintock extended the debate offer a final time and Schwarzenegger signed off by saying, "We will talk about all those things, and we will have a great time at the Republican convention."

A Los Angeles Times poll released late Thursday showed McClintock with support from 18 percent of likely voters to Schwarzenegger's 25 percent. McClintock's support grew 6 percentage points since the August poll, while Schwarzenegger's grew 3 percentage points. Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante was the leading candidate in the poll, with 30 percent.

"The Armstrong & Getty Show" also airs on KQCA-58 TV.

He hasn't spent his life thinking about every piece of minutia

LOL .. nuff said.. like we need a rank amateur running the 5th largest economic engine in the world.

This is not a bodybuilding and muscle rippling contest.

Good for him what he did on his own and his businesses, but that doesn't grant him a free pass in my book to waltz in and run this state.

Political campaigns are about winning elections, but not at any cost. If you're a conservative Republican, "not at any cost" means, not at the cost of supporting and electing a liberal like Arnold.

And you call yourself a "Reagan Man"? Perhaps would be advisable at this point for you, to go and revisit President's Reagan stances on Republicanism.
You just might learn a thing or two.

You are doing a great disservice to Mr. Reagan's name by using it as a handle. You don't know nothing about President Ronaldus Magnus.

I think it does. And so do alot of others. Tell me, what successful businseses has McClintock run? Why is he qualified in running this economy. I'll take a successful person in life over a career politician, and a mostly losing one at that.

I just wanted to let you know that the many graphics you post on every thread make it very difficult on those of us using a dialup connection. Spamming threads is generally frowned upon here, and I wonder if you could see your way to reducing the amount of pics posted?

~~ Ronald Reagan, in his autobiography, An American Life (Chapter 26, p. 171)

"When I began entering into the give and take of legislative bargaining in Sacramento, a lot of the most radical conservatives who had supported me during the election didn't like it. "Compromise" was a dirty word to them and they wouldn't face the fact that we couldn't get all of what we wanted today. They wanted all or nothing and they wanted it all at once. If you don't get it all, some said, don't take anything. "I'd learned while negotiating union contracts that you seldom got everything you asked for. And I agreed with FDR, who said in 1933: 'I have no expectations of making a hit every time I come to bat. What I seek is the highest possible batting average.' "If you got seventy-five or eighty percent of what you were asking for, I say, you take it and fight for the rest later, and that's what I told these radical conservatives who never got used to it.

same old tired arguments.

Tom is probably more familiar with the inner workings and financial mechanisms and programs of this state then most who have ever served in this state govt. and yet, that isn;t worth anything... but arnold who offers he will have independent auditors open the books is better equipped. Ha! Who Buffet's auditors. No conflict of interest ther, nope. ha..

Who pays for those auditors btw, when we have 259 auditors already on the state payroll?

Oh , I know, we need a CEO not a gubinor. Gubs are ceremonial anyway.

I am not a Republican. I was for close to forty years but decided the party was not extreme enough to ever be of any account. We are three votes in my family, two votes are in the mail for McClintock and my vote for him will be Oct.7. I vote for McClintock because I think he will be the best man for the job and for California. I will vote McClintock because the positions he takes are the ones closest to my beliefs. The main reason put up to vote for A/S is that he is the most electable. IMO that is a horrible reason select a leader and that kind of reasoning has gone a long way towards making the mess that the party finds itself in.

Another thread on this race was entitled something about a bloodbath occurring at the upcoming convention. I would look forward to such a shakeout as I feel that the biggest problem with the Republican Party is the ideological split that this election brings to the surface. Moderate Republicans and the hard right cannot coexist. I think it would be a good thing for one or the other faction to take total control of the party and expunnge the weaker faction entirely from its ranks. I am extreme in my views and would be rooting for the hard right to prevail in such a battle. At least, this recall election and the debate going on in this forum has flushed out the moderates(RINORATS)from the hard right conservatives(WING NUTS or whatever).

Imagine the shrill screams of outrage if Arnold had pulled a stunt like this on Tom?

The reason this makes news is that Arnold is becoming rather well known for avoiding situations in which he has to know specifics, think on his feet, and react in real time in an adversarial environment.

Not a good sign for Arnold! supporters, sorry to say.

By contrast, it is hard to imagine Tom being ambushed by Arnold!. Why? Because Tom is running an honestly open campaign, and Arnold! is not. Tom is willing to take on anyone, even those in his own party, for what he believes in. Arnold! is not.

But whatever am I thinking? Arnold! can win! That's all that matters. The ends justify the means!

Resistance is futile.
We will be assimilated!

If I remember correctly, you aimed the same juvenile nonsense at me several years back. It would appear you've learned nothing in that time and are still a pathetic trashtalking punk. I know more about Ronald Reagan then most people and probably forgotten more about Reagan, then you'll ever know in your life. But that's not the issue of this thread.

This thread is all about McClintock versus Schwarzenegger. McClintock is a traditional conservative Republican and Arnold is a liberal Republican. McClintock holds the same beliefs and values that Reagan held. Arnold has more in common with Teddy Kennedy, RFK jr and Cruz Bustamonte, then he has in common with George W.Bush, Rush Limbaugh and Michael Reagan.

Arnold refuses to have a one on one, face to face, man to man debate with Tom McClintock and for good reason. McClintock would clean his clock. Arnold is running from the debates and running from Tom McClintock. Arnold can't think on his feet and requires coaching, to tell him how to act and what to say in an open public forum. This is just the latest in a long list of failures on Arnold's part.

If Ronald Reagan could speak out, he would be appalled and outraged, at whats taking place in his home state. Reagan wouldn't recognize the Golden State GOP any longer. Republicans who would set aside their principles and surrender their conservative beliefs and values, are damaging the credibility of the GOP and the conservative agenda of the party platform.

Truly shameful behavior by the Califronia GOP!

He hasn't spent his life thinking about every piece of minutia on how things get done and the pros and cons of every single issue like a career politician. that's why everyone likes him...he doesn't have an answer to everything

The California governorship, you don't start off by requiring training wheels. You are in effect admitting Arnold! is not ready for the job. Stop making excuses why Arnold! can't debate, it is truly pathetic. It's time for Arnold! to stand up or get out if he can't answer questions and challenges in a straightforward manner.

This is supposed to be the kind of country where anyone can stand up for what they believe to be right. Apparently Arnold! supporters did not get the message, and insist Arnold! deserves some sort of free pass for the chief executive position to one of the world's largest economies. I don't see the need for anyone to get a free pass. Even Arnold! If Arnold! can't handle other people with differing views in a graceful manner from his own party, how in the heck is he ever going to function effectively as California's future governor??

WWLD (What would Lincoln do???)

Oh, great, you're here! :-)

I was hoping to run into our resident "Reagan expert" and double-check a few things with you, if that's okay? :-)

What year did Reagan switch from a life-long Democrat to being a Republican? He was in his 50's correct?

When Reagan ran for Governor was he pro-choice or pro-life? Pro-choice, wasn't it, not pro-life until he was thinking of running for President? :-)

Did or did Reagan not sign a gun control bill into California law?

As President, did or did not Reagan sign into law the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, blanket amnesty for 2.7 million immigrants?

Did or did Reagan not tolerate homosexuals in his social circle, even allowing them to sleep over at the White House?

His first term as Governor, did Reagan raise or lower taxes in California? Raise, correct?

Thanks, I thought you'd be the perfect one to ask :-)

Arnold can't think on his feet and requires coaching, to tell him how to act and what to say in an open public forum.

Arnold's campaign sent a letter on September 3 to the CBA requesting that the questions at the official debate NOT be given to them ahead of time. Has Tom done the same? It doesn't sound like Arnold is afraid of real debate to me.

"Rep. David Dreier, co-chair of the actor's campaign, sent a letter to the CBA on Wednesday asking that it reconsider the decision to give candidates the questions in advance."

Please see post #158 and show me evidence that Tom has ALSO requested that the official debate questions not be provided ahead of time.

If Tom hasn't requested the same, then it would appear that HE is the one afraid of real debate :-)
