California State Assembly passes SB328 Free tuition for illegal aliens

SACRAMENTO (AP) _ A bill that would allow undocumented immigrants to apply for financial aid at California community colleges was approved by the state Assembly Thursday.

The bill, by Sen. Martha Escutia, D-Norwalk, would direct the board of governors to establish a process so students without legal immigration status can apply to have tuition waived.

It would require that the student attended high school in California for at least three years, obtained a diploma or an equivalent degree and, if the student isn't in the state legally, has applied to become a legal resident.

Opponents said the bill followed in the footsteps of the recently approved bill to allow illegal immigrants to get drivers licenses.

``Now we want to give financial aid in community colleges to illegal aliens?'' said Assemblyman Dennis Mountjoy, R-Monrovia. ``Members, what is the matter with you?''

But supporters said the bill would help those students become educated members of the state's work force, helping the economy.

``We can continue to bury our heads in the sand and ignore it, but this helps kids who are in this state, who have graduated from high school, who we hope will go on to college, or learn a trade,'' said Assemblyman Joe Nation, D-San Rafael. ``It's the right thing to do politically, it's the right thing to do socially, and it's the right thing to do economically as well.''

The bill was approved on a 43-27 vote, returning to the Senate for approval of Assembly amendments.

This the same "California" that's firing their governor over a monstrous budget deficit?

Just checking...

"To whomever's last to leave, please turn the lights out ..."

...and leave the wacko, utopian, bleeding heart, CommieLib ideas that wrecked Kalifornia in Kalifornia. It's bad enough already here in flyover country, trying to fight off the sniffles from the Socialist flu that's bearing down on us from the Northeast and Left Coast.

Why don't we just greet illegals at the border with fanfare, bunting, and a brass band? Tables will be set up with forms...voter registration forms and forms to get welfare, driver's licenses, free medical care, free tuition, and all the other freebies American citizens don't get. Then air-conditioned buses will take the newcomers to their nice free homes. We citizens and legal residents will just have to bite the bullet. We'll have to take second jobs (if we can find jobs at all,) and we'll have to do without in order to pay for all of it. After all, it's the "humane" thing to do, and "they're going to come here anyway," so we might as well "face reality" and do the compassionate thing!

Good Lord. What am I doing in this state? This HAS to be the stupidest state in the union. I've lived here for over 30 years, and I'm about ready to bail!

it's time for McClintock to come out with some powerful statements.

Tom already has (although I haven't yet heard him address this particular bill--probably too new). This morning, McClintock was on a talk radio program discussing illegal immigration in very plain and direct (and forceful) language. He discussed his support for the referendum to abolish SB60 (driver's licenses for illegals). He talked about getting CA law enforcement to arrest illegals and turn them over to INS for deportation. He talked about getting a fair day in court for Prop 187. He talked about demanding that the federal government enforce immigration laws and controls.

McClintock said all the right things, and he did not shy away from the subject. On the other hand, Schwarzenegger has been waffling and parsing on illegal immigration. Schwarzenegger had advocated amnesty for "undocumented workers", and has parroted the Democratic party-line about how they (illegals) are good for California and that we need to take care of them.

Illegal immigration is the number one security threat facing the United States, and is the number one financial threat facing California. We must close the borders now!

VOTE for Tom McClintock!

Just when you thought it couldn't get worse the idiots in Sacramento pass this bill in the middle of a 38B deficit. There either really stupid, ignorant, or just diabolical.

The California state legislature is run by Mexico. Scum like Cedillo, Nunez, Vasconcellos, and Excutia ought to be stripped of their anchor-baby citizenship and deported in cattle cars.

If McClintock stays in another 2 weeks before leaving the damage will be too great for Schwarzenegger to overcome by Oct. 7.

If Schwarzenegger wins, he will sign--not veto--these types of bills. Davis, Bustamante, Schwarzenegger... not a big difference between the three. All will bring down California (and the US), the only difference is the speed at which they will do it.

IF you are a true conservative, and IF you are serious about saving California, then you MUST vote for McClintock.

Arnold voted for Prop 187
For the unitiated, the California GOP's long slide into oblivion began with its ardent support for Proposition 187 -- the ballot initiative that denied health and education benefits to undocumented immigrants.

The issue is a killer, especially with California's large Latino and Asian communities.

Well, it turns out Schwarzenegger voted for Prop 187.

The Republican has promoted himself as the candidate in California's gubernatorial recall who can best appeal to the state's politically and ethnically diverse electorate.

But Democrats were quick to jump on the disclosure as a chink in the action hero's armor.

The GOP-backed Proposition 187 to deny health care and public education to illegal immigrants was passed by a wide margin, although it was eventually ruled unconstitutional. It remains a contentious issue and a litmus test for some voters, particularly Hispanics, to gauge whether a candidate is immigrant-friendly.

Furthermore, in a political miscalculation of epic proportions, Armold named former California Gov. Pete Wilson as chairman of his campaign. Wilson is the architect of Prop 187, and arguably the most hated man in California.

Schwarzenegger has just given lie to his claims of moderation in the eyes of most Californians. Yet his party's right flank is occupied by Simon and McClintock. In addition, he's taking oncoming fire from Rush Limbaugh and other right-wing personalities.
