California State Assembly passes SB328 Free tuition for illegal aliens

SACRAMENTO (AP) _ A bill that would allow undocumented immigrants to apply for financial aid at California community colleges was approved by the state Assembly Thursday.

The bill, by Sen. Martha Escutia, D-Norwalk, would direct the board of governors to establish a process so students without legal immigration status can apply to have tuition waived.

It would require that the student attended high school in California for at least three years, obtained a diploma or an equivalent degree and, if the student isn't in the state legally, has applied to become a legal resident.

Opponents said the bill followed in the footsteps of the recently approved bill to allow illegal immigrants to get drivers licenses.

``Now we want to give financial aid in community colleges to illegal aliens?'' said Assemblyman Dennis Mountjoy, R-Monrovia. ``Members, what is the matter with you?''

But supporters said the bill would help those students become educated members of the state's work force, helping the economy.

``We can continue to bury our heads in the sand and ignore it, but this helps kids who are in this state, who have graduated from high school, who we hope will go on to college, or learn a trade,'' said Assemblyman Joe Nation, D-San Rafael. ``It's the right thing to do politically, it's the right thing to do socially, and it's the right thing to do economically as well.''

The bill was approved on a 43-27 vote, returning to the Senate for approval of Assembly amendments.

No, it's their extended families, who are citizens, and the legal immigrant community that is what's being talked about when the term "immigrant vote" is used -- under the assumption (which is backed by data) that those of their race who are here legally (particularly more recent immigrants) vote based on who helps more of their families or more of their "race" have an easier time getting, and staying, here.

How could even one illegal be approved for such a thing when children who were born and raised in this country of American or legal residents are turned away for financial aid. This is just outrageous.

Mexico gives free college at it's public universities ---- just to it's citizens, so it's not like they don't already have an opportunity to get free college. They expect US taxpayers to provide them everything free also.

Ummm...believe it or not, I don't have a problem with this. Once you get past the inflammatory headline, you'll see this isn't a "cross the border for free college" bill. It requires:

1) That the student must have attended a California high school AND graduated, so recent border-crossers looking for an education need not apply.

2) The illegal alien must first apply for legal residency, meaning that they will no longer be an illegal immigrant.

I have no problem with LEGAL, EDUCATED, and TAXPAYING immigrants...just illegal criminal ones working for cr*p wages and undermining our economy. This bill will help turn the latter into the former.

Then how about waiving the tuition for legal citizens, so that all have a fair shot at college? There are plenty of lower income and middle class families that can't afford to send their children to college. Why discriminate against them by waiving the tuition for illegals only??

The National Guard pushed for a bill that would have had community college and CSU tuition free and UC tuition 75% paid for for its members in California (majority of states offer educational benefirts for Guard members as an incentive to enlist/stay in)...that bill got stripped of most of its benefits by the senior leadership in Sacramento. Financially this may not have been the best time to do this (for the Guard), but for that to get hacked while other legislation like that posted gets passed is truly astounding.
