Opponents of vouchers claim that public schools are ailing from lack of funds. Yet the District of Columbia spends more than $11,000 per year per student, as opposed to the national average of $7,500. The District's children are among the worst in academic achievement in the United States.

Even the $11,000 is misleading. It reflects registraion numbers, but the DC school system considers 80% attendance to be 'achievable.' To me, it sounds like average attendance is less than 80%. Thus per pupil at a desk spending is almost $14000. Not much lower than what those members of Congress are paying to the fancy schools.
