Lawmakers send Davis bill requiring clean school restrooms

(Sacramento-AP) -- Schools would have to maintain clean and operational restrooms or face the loss of state maintenance funds under a bill that's headed for Governor Davis' desk.

The state Senate gave the measure final approval today, voting 23 to 10 to accept Assembly amendments to the bill.

The author, Senator Kevin Murray of Culver City, says school restrooms are often dirty, malfunctioning and lack soap, toilet paper and paper towels.

Under the bill, schools would have to keep restrooms operational, clean and stocked with toilet paper, soap and paper towels or functioning hand dryers.

Schools would also have to keep restrooms open in most instances.

School districts that failed to meet the bill's requirements could lose state deferred maintenance money.

I'm sure he'll declare that there's not enough funding for THAT. But if the Unions wanted cleaner bathrooms, he'd "find" the money.

Well, now California is going to need to hire a crew of restroom inspectors. Very, very smart.

I suppose if a school can’t get some soap and hot water going, it must be doing real well in the intellect expanding activities.

If you have to pass a law to get crappers clean, well, that’s just pathetic. And a bad, pathetic law by our ever diminishing midget political class.

They just keep getting funnier. The California legislature hasn't got a clue how far removed from reality they really are.

The schools are broke and broken and the legislature wants to clean up the johns.

Go figure.

The fact that the bathrooms are cesspools at all is testament to the inability of schools to do even the simplest thing. And people think their kids are really getting educated...

They've got janitors, but the restrooms are a mess. They've got teachers, but the kids aren't learning. Something's not quite right here.

Fine, as long as we have the students on restroom duty.
