More on Security Cabinet Decision Regarding Arafat
22:22 Sep 11, '03 / 14 Elul 5763

(IsraelNN.com) Minister (Shinui) Avraham Poraz was the only member of the Security Cabinet to oppose the decision in principle to “remove” Yasser Arafat. Also opposing the decision was GSS (General Security Service/Shin Bet) Avi Dichter.

The careful wording of the decision did not state “expel” or “deport”, but “remove, leaving much to one’s interpretation. It was also stated that Arafat is a major “obstacle to peace”. The government at present has cleared the way for future action but it is quite clear at this stage, no immediate steps towards Arafat’s “removal” are underway. The terminology indicates the government may opt to have Arafat eliminated, rather than deported, or harm him in some way.

Analysts are in agreement, that the removal of Arafat at this time would harm America’s strategic interests in Iraq and as such, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will hold off for as long as possible in his ongoing effort to maintain excellent working relations with US President George W. Bush.

The security forum also decided to wage an unrelenting war against Hamas to bring an end to the terror attacks.

Dance around the terminology all you want but "remove" does not mean "leave 'em where he is".

A recent article I read interpreted the latest U.S. policy (white house) as being, "no surprises on Arafat, keep us informed".
This is a much broader interpretation than "Don't touch Arafat", as has been the case in the past.

It is my belief that expulsion is Not An Option.
Expulsion simply means Arafat directs terrorist operations from outside Israel's sphere of influence.
Arafat needs to be arrested, confined, and isolated from the PA power structure.
Barring that, he needs to be "terminated with extreme prejudice".
