Another unpleasant anniversary today (Ithaca is the City of Evil alert)

Painful memories that are attached to the date of Sept. 11 are not limited to the year 2001.

Thirty years ago today, on Sept. 11, 1973, Chile's elected president, Salvador Allende, was overthrown in a coup by Augusto Pinochet, a Chilean general whose subsequent 17-year dictatorial regime is best remembered for its ongoing human rights abuses. It is widely held that the Pinochet coup was strongly backed and even planned by the U.S. intelligence community, which was eager to be rid of Allende because of his Marxist background.

Regime changes are nothing new in world history or in U.S. history for that matter. Few would mourn the demise of the Allende regime and, more recently, Saddam Hussein's dictatorship in Iraq. Yet both events should inspire some healthy introspection over the consequences of one nation interfering in the leadership of another.

Yet both events should inspire some healthy introspection over the consequences of one nation interfering in the leadership of another.

Ithaca is the City of Evil.

I'm surprised the local paper didn't mention that and argue that his life of violence on the gridiron shortened his life. ;-)

Not to mention the fact that Allende was centured three times by his nation's government. The fact in this case are so clear and so documented I cannot see why the left gets away with this slander. This always comes up with the America Haters and they always get away with it.
