Huge molluscs baffle Brazilian scientists
Scientists are baffled after hundreds of huge molluscs began appearing at a dam in Brazil.
They have no idea what they are and are worried because locals are eating them, reports Jornal da Tarde.
The molluscs, found in the Billings dam at Ribeirao Pires in Sao Paulo, weigh about half a kilo each.
They are reproducing quickly and specialist Virgilio Alcides de Farias said: "We are astonished. We have never seen anything like this before. This dam is contaminated."
However, Joana da Silva, who lives near the dam, said: "They taste like chicken, it is really good."
A spokesman for the town mayor said laws would be introduced to stop people taking the molluscs out of the dam until experts identify them.

I understand that at the base of most large dams are enormous sturgeon that spend their entire existance trying to poke holes and go downstream...

Most of the "clams" i've eaten were more on the fishy side.

"I understand that at the base of most large dams are enormous sturgeon that spend their entire existance trying to poke holes and go downstream..." Maybe...I've always heard the same about catfish.

I have respect for da Silva. Anybody that looks at a one pound molusk and their first thought is "wonder how it tastes" is alright in my book.

Exactly, the key to random cuisine is to have an all purpose recipe that can make just about anything taste good. I'm a fan of lemmon pepper and pan frying in a lot of butter. But tempora frying is also good (IMHO the best onion rings in the world are tempora onions, and I'm a big fan of onion rings).

Yep, I've heard of really, really large channel catfish even at small local dams! They scare the heck out of the guys who do the underwater repair jobs.

I cought a 765 lb catfish out of Utah Lake. The tough part wasn't catching the fish, it was putting the 100 lb cricket on the hook.

A friend of mine is a professional scuba/hardhat diver. The company he works for has a contract to clean the cooling water intakes and exhausts for the nuclear power plant down near Bay City, Texas.
One time a team went down, came back up immediately, scared to death and refused to go back down.
They said that there were catfish down there as big as a Volkswagen and could easily swallow a man.
Whether or not it is true I have no idea but I wouldn't think that a pro diver would tell falsehoods about such a thing.
