Who gets paid six figures?

It all depends on your definition of "decimal point."

Unless you are single, it is virtually impossible to live in Manhattan for less than $100m a year. A decent apartment rents for $20m.

Six figures isn't really a reliable yardstick of success, these days. In the San Francisco area, it won't get you more than a lower middle class lifestyle.

Working for Uncle Sam

Considering that the pension fund won't go bankrupt this is currently the best money for the least amount of work and layoff risk. Unfortunately you may find that you have a vested interest in voting for Democrats. And you may go out of your mind holding up a shovel all day.

You can't even buy a two bedroom condo in West LA at a salary of $100,000.

Critical care nurses with 10-15 years and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification can make over $100K per year.
I married one 25 years ago. Call me lucky and smart.
She makes a ton of money is is not home much.
Just kidding/kind of.

Yes, and they live in dorm rooms and eat cafeteria food. In the real world people who make less than $100m are spending half of their take-home pay on rent if they choose to live in Manhattan. A parking space is another $5m per year...

Well, it all depends on how frugal you are I suppose. Studios in the village can be rented for $1000-1200 a month. Metro passes are $60/month? I don't live there, just visited a couple times so I'm not fully sure. Yeah you could eat out every day and that would eat up a lot of money. Or you could buy your food and cook it at home more often than not...

Buying a newspaper, lunch out, having a car (in manhattan), and lots of other things can be cut back on without much of a noticeable change in lifestyle but with a very noticable change to one's wallet..

Here's one for y'all to brighten up your day:

Tennessee Education Lottery Corp's CEO, Rebecca Paul, will be getting a $350,000 salary plus up to $210,000 in bonus if she gets the Tennessee Lottory started and it generates a certain amount by a certain deadline. A lottery CEO! Now that's a new one, particularly since the lottery is a state-run operation.

I don't know about everyone else, but this just seems a bit out of line for the job she's doing. I mean, its a lottery. Set the odds, advertise, and people will play. What can be more simple?

BTW, my guess would be to look for Ms. Paul to run for higher office in the next few years. I doubt she'll last more than 3 years as "lottery CEO".

I have friends who live in Jersey City and Hoboken. Yeah, it's not Manhattan, but it's $1.50 and 15 minutes from Manhattan 24/7. You can get rents in duplexes near PATH stations for dirt cheap (as compared to actually living in Manhaatan)

What's missing from this is the total take home pay. A corporate six figure job exposes all of your income to federal, state and local taxes with no deductions. A self-employed businessman who manages money flow, appointments, expenses, etc can write off a significant amount of gross income, have a lower net income and achieve a higher standard of living. The more government "taxes the rich", the less incentive there is to work for corporate America.
