Three Palestinians - two senior Hamas leader and a 12-year-old boy - were killed Tuesday during an Israel Defense Forces search for Hamas militants in the West Bank city of Hebron.
One of the Palestinians killed by IDF troops in Hebron was tentatively identified as Ahmed Bader, Hamas leader in the southern West Bank city. The second was likely Izz a-Din Maysek, a senior wanted Hamas operative in the city. This report was not immediately confirmed by military sources.
For 12 hours, Israeli troops had surrounded the eight-story apartment building in which the two wanted men were hiding and called on loudspeakers for their surrender. Building residents were evacuated from the scene at the beginning of the siege.
During the siege, the militants opened fire on Israeli forces and troops fired two tank shells at a window of the building through which the wanted men were spotted. A 12-year-old Palestinian boy, whom Palestinian sources identified as Hebron resident Thaer Sayuri, was killed when shrapnel from the shell hit the building next door. The sources said another Palestinian man and a woman were wounded in the incident.
Later Tuesday afternoon, a small force of Duvdevan commandos entered the building to prepare explosives. The troops encountered the two wanted Palestinians, whom they killed in a quick exchange of gunfire, hiding in an elevator,. No soldiers were wounded in the short gunbattle. Additional troops then entered the building and evacuated the bodies of the Hamas men.
IDF troops on Tuesday evening demolished the apartment building on the tops floors of which they believed additional militants may still be hiding.
The building, which belongs to the Kawasmeh family, is in the Abu Kteila neighborhood near Hebron's Islamic University. Many Hamas militants who have carried out terror attacks in the past year live in the Abu Kteila neighborhood.
IDF Chief of Staff Moshe Ya'alon said Tuesday that the cell that was holed up in Hebron on Tuesday was planning on carrying out a terror attack in the near future.
The IDF also emphasized that the two Hamas men were involved in attacks in which dozens of Israeli civilians and soldiers were killed.
In a separate incident, an IDF tank shot and killed a Palestinian man suspected of planting a road-side bomb north of the Karni Terminal on Tuesday, Army Radio reported.
The terminal is used to transfer goods between Israel and the Gaza Strip.
Jerusalem increases alert level Security forces raised the alert level in Jerusalem on Tuesday morning due to warnings of terror attacks, Israel Radio reported. Authorities suspect one or more terrorists may have already succeeded in infiltrating into Israeli territory.
Earlier Tuesday, Palestinians fired four mortar shells at a Gaza Strip settlement, according to the radio. No injuries were reported.
Late Monday night, security forces along the seam line border were on a high state of alert after receiving warnings of possible terrorist infiltrations into Israel. A large number of Border Policemen and IDF troops were deployed along the seam line border, as well as at entrances to towns in the Sharon region.
Sources in the defense establishment fear that Hamas will try to carry out a large terror attack in the coming days to avenge the failed Israel Air Force strike on Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin on Saturday.
This article reminds me so much that the Palestinians don't live in terror-poverty, yes, TERROR, no. Unless, of course, you are a Hamas terrorist who knows you are being hunted down, and deservedly so.
But the rest of the Palestinians don't have to worry about Israeli suicide (homicide) youth strapping themselves up with bombs and blowing themselves up in grocery stores, tea rooms, buses, whatever. They don't have to live day to day like all Israeli's do-never knowing when the next homicide nutcase is going to explode him or herself.
The Palestinians are lucky the Israeli's target their attacks at the perps. Something terrorists are way to cowardly to do.
The pali homicide bombers SNEAK in to claim their triumphant death victories.
