[history]
President Bush's Sunday address to the country was an encouraging expression of presidential resolve to succeed in the war on terrorism, and specifically the Iraqi component of that long struggle. Perhaps, understandably, he left the description of the United Nations' role general and vague. This may maximize his political support on postwar policy for awhile. His national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice, characterized that role as, in effect, a fig leaf to permit other countries, such as India, to send troops. Many of those who opposed the war in the first place view the U.N. role as a fig leaf, not for the contributing countries, but for the United States to effect a quick exit from Iraq. Such a process sounds dangerously like the decent interval that the United States once gained by Vietnamization, followed by retreat and defeat.

I'm hoping that the recruiting numbers are up. I want to see our military remain an all volunteer force, and it seem to me that a military career would be a great way to spend your life.

Good luck, be sure to write home! Blackbird.

Iraq's nervous neighbors seem to have less confidence in the United Nations than do most of the senators and congressmen who found a camera or a reporter in the last 24 hours. We very much share the unblinking view of Iraq's friendly neighbors. Perhaps inviting the UN into Iraq for a bigger role is a good idea, say, in the Sunni triangle (flytrap and all) until Kofi thanks our troops and begs the world to support our noble efforts (*g*).

If, as the president suggested Sunday night, we need more troops, he should call up more Guard and Reserve units, as necessary. A large percentage of the Guard and Reserves have already been called up for active duty, or will be soon. The public has to be made to understand the depths of the klinton cuts in money and manpower in the military during their eight years of corruption. The pubbies should also admit to their cowardice in going along with it silently. Also, the meaningless deployment, started by the klintons, of American troops as meals-on-wheels will have to stop. The US military was stretched almost to the breaking point during the klinton era, and we were supposedly "at peace".
Standing up to Saddam was easy. The hard part will be undoing the damage the klintons did, which was more far-reaching than the 9-11 attacks.

I noticed you joined FR the week after the September 11th attacks. Fortunately for our nation many others found their calling to be serving in the military instead of simply posting on a website. I find the decision to join the military even more inspiring nowadays given the scary times and known sacrifices these folks will be making. Thank God for them all!

I am a Veteran, been there done that, your childish jibe aside. Otherwise, what's the point of your post to me? Why are you sitting behind the keyboard instead of leading by example? Blackbird.
To: BlackbirdSST
I know you're a veteran. We've had discussions before. But I found the timing of your joining FR quite amusing. So it wasn't a childish jab, although one can argue about the response.

Just goes to show it doesn't take much to amuse some folk's. Blackbird.
To: BlackbirdSST
Amusing? Hardly. I find you to be rather bitter and quite the pessimist. Let's just say I'm glad we weren't in the same unit.

A co-worker of Vets_Husband is a Gaurd Pilot and just left for the region. He totally understood "why" he is going. He is leaving his wife and children behind.
Our troops "do" understand what is at stake. Especially when they look into their own childrens faces at night. They can imagine what it must be like for people in other countries who know the threat of terrorism on a daily basis. They know that threat is "real" and it was growing with regard to our own country, as was very evident after 9-11. God FORBID we start having suicide bombers with backpacks at our malls or bus stops. That is what our guys are doing. They are meeting the terrorists on their soil, on their turf!
I saw the smart*ss remark someone made to you.. and I just wanted to say our friend did VOLUNTEER, and has done so for many years. PROUDLY so. KNOWING what he might be called upon to do. May God protect him and bring him home to his wife and children.
I volunteered at one time, and so did my husband for many years. We weren't "drafted". I'm sure not saying anything about the honorable service of those who were drafted. I'm only mentioning it because we were talking about "VOLUNTEERING". I agree, it is better when it is a volunteer military, rather than a draft situation.
Hopefully, I misread, or mis-interpreted the comments of the poster with regard to you volunteering McGavin. But it seemed to be a rather snide comment.

Put Kofi in charge of security for any UN presence.
He lied that the bombing was the U.S.'s fault--when the UN had declined our offer of security to be "accessible".
Kofi is such a hypocritical schmuck, his security carries unlicensed H & K MP-5's--while U.S. citizens are serially disarmed.
Remember, no UN in Iraq unless Kofi walks point.

Bump!
To: Vets_Husband_and_Wife; McGavin999
I saw the smart*ss remark someone made to you..
First, I see no evidence of McGavin999 "Volunteering" to do anything. He/she thinks it's good to Volunteer, so did I when I did, and so did my wife when she did. That isn't the issue. The issue is Voluteering other's, hence my smart@ss remark! I don't believe in sending someone else to do work I am not willing to do myself! I totally disagree with an all Volunteer force, the elitist don't get to send their Son's and Daughter's into harms way, like they got to send my Volunteer Daughter. They get to make the decision to send, but they fail to participate themselves. Why aren't the Bush twin's sitting in the desert heat? They are of age you know! There's something inherently wrong with that policy in a Country striving for equality, don't you think?
Secondly, don't address me in the third person, you have something to say to me, call me by name or don't bother. Otherwise, have a good day! Blackbird.
To: BlackbirdSST; McGavin999; Coop
Why aren't the Bush twin's sitting in the desert heat? What part of "VOLUNTEERING" don't you GET?
BTW, PINGING someone IS addressing them. So I WAS addressing you!
Also, the way I read it, McGavin was COMMENDING the volunteers in our nations military.
One more thing, your VOLUNTEER daughter knew what the HELL she was joining. So don't come crying to me "the elitist don't get to send their Son's and Daughter's into harms way, like they got to send my Volunteer Daughter".
If she is proud of her service, then I'm proud of her too. But if she is one of those who is crying about what she is having to do.. then I would ask what the hell she thought she was signing up for!! Because that doesn't wash in this house!!
Same goes for any parent that has a child serving. No less a parent that has already served!
On that note, I have to hope that you are just being an overly worried, overly emotional parent and are speaking out of that worry. But I would hope you would be as strong as we need our troops to be, as brave as we need them to be.
In advance of that thought I will "THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE, AND THAT OF YOUR DAUGHTER". Then hope you will not do a dis-service to that honor by diminishing her service to our country.
May God protect your child, and all who are serving.
To: BlackbirdSST
Not to diminish your daughter's service in any way; I'm quite grateful for her sacrifices in protecting our freedom. But the Bush twins are under a far greater threat than your daughter will probably ever be.
