Two teenage girls, skipping school Friday, accidentally called the county sheriff's confidential cell phone number to try to buy drugs.
When they learned of their mistake, they hung up and dialed the number again.
On the second call, a county sheriff's deputy answered the telephone, calling himself "Dupe."
Undaunted by their first mistake, the teenager placed an order for drugs and told "Dupe" where she would be with the money.
The sting operation was conducted and two Austin teenage girls, ages 15 and 17, were arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
One was released to her parent and the other was turned over to a probation officer.
"I've never heard of anything like that happening in my life but it's all true," Mower County Sheriff Terese Amazi said. "Apparently, they didn't know the meaning of 'Dupe' as in 'duped' either. It's incredible."
According to the county sheriff, the teenagers must have dialed her cell phone number by mistake.
"I don't give it out to everybody," Amazi said.
When the cell phone call came in, Amazi was in her office at the Austin-Mower County Law Enforcement Center in downtown Austin.
The sheriff thought the female voice on the other end of the phone line was her teenage daughter, so she answered, "Yo. What's up?"
The caller said she wanted to buy a "nickel bag of marijuana."
Amazi said she was startled and told the caller she had the county sheriff's number and the teenager told the sheriff, "I'm sorry" and hung up.
While the county sheriff composed herself and told other staff about the strange call, her cell phone beeped again.
"Apparently, she must have hit redial, because it was the same girl," Amazi said.
Without speaking, the sheriff quickly gave the phone to Deputy Steve Sandvick, who answered it saying "Yo. What's up?"
The caller asked who it was and the male deputy said he was "Dupe."
Once again, the caller asked if she could buy a nickel bag of marijuana.
Dupe agreed and asked where she wanted to meet. The caller told him at a northeast Austin convenience store and the meeting was set up for 1 p.m. Friday.
The sheriff sent an unmarked car to the location with a probation officer after the caller ID function on the sheriff's office phone was traced to a residence in northeast Austin.
When the law officers surveilled the convenience store parking lot, they saw the girl sitting on a bench. She and her companion were identified and taken into custody.
Cash for the marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found on both girls arrested at the scene.
Later Friday afternoon, Sheriff Amazi was still marveling at the bizarre circumstances.
"Not only did they do something wrong, but they should have been in school," she said. "They called the same number twice and didn't know what 'dupe' meant and must not have known about caller ID either. It was really weird."

Anyway, a dime bag is small enough as it is. I think an 1/8th (of an ounce) goes for $50 these days. An eighth ain't that much either, maybe 5 dime bags or so. It all makes me wonder who in the hell buys a nickel bag. I thought nickel bag was a denomination that went extinct arounf the time Foghat stopped making hit records. But hey, what do I know?

"Really STUUUPID Gophers" would be more appropriate.
Considering that the kid in question is in Austin, MINNESOTA, I'd say that remark is not all that bright.
... and they let these people reproduce...
Not to say that Austin, Texas -- the cage where we keep all the liberals in Texas -- doesn't have some "really STUUUPID Texans"...
