Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon is in a drug induced coma and the next 24-48 hours are critical to determining his survival, doctors at Northwestern Medical Hospital said after the Governor underwent brain surgery.
Dr. Wesley Yapor, the neurosurgeon who headed the surgical team, said blood was removed from both side of the Governor's brain.
The source of the major bleeding appeared to be a stroke, Yapor said, but some other blood appeared to be caused by a fall.

I hope you are right, MM. However, it is the silly season....and lib/dem candidates (announced and unannounced) are being very silly these days.

Soooo, can you tell us anything about Joe Kernan. Are people going to be happy with him as Gov?

No it would not become a Wellstone debacle. I am a Hoosier and I know that should our Governor pass away he will be honored in a very digified manner. It will not become a free for all that Paul Wellstones' funeral became.

good point darlin.
-- silly season.

I ask again, if this man should pass,...<p. Perhaps one should worry about that when/if the time comes or are just going to launch a pre-emptive strike right now?

Just caught your screen name. If your business is in Indy, and you're German, you may have been at my wedding!

If Kernan becomes governor, he'll do fine.
Both O'Bannon and Kernan are fine individuals, and I've had a chance to work with Kernan closely during my time with the Indiana Senate. He's just plain one of the most likeable folks you'll ever meet.
The one thing I really like about Indiana and its politics is that everyone is really nice, and everyone is trying to do their jobs the best way they see fit. It so happens that Ds and Rs generally think that a different way is best, but both of them try hard to do what they think is best for Indiana. At the end of the day, everyone is friends and people just understand that it is only a job and that everyone is just doing what they think is right.
Kernan is one of those guys and someone that I would totally trust as Gov. I might disagree with him on some of the way he does things, but at the end of the day, I'd definitely buy the guy a beer.
Kernan was a Vietnam War vet, and he was shot down over Vietnam and held as a POW in Hanoi. One of Kernan's more amusing moments, I think, was after he just finished his first session as President of the Senate, he was asked which was worse, being stuck in a Vietnamese prison camp or running the Indiana Senate. Kernan's response, after some reflection: "I'll have to get back to you."

Well, I'm not a Hoosier, and I know even less about their #2 man. But I DO know that Kernan turned down a run for the governorship next year (and he could have had the nomination if he wanted it, I believe).
As for being happy with him, well, I'd be unhappy with having really ANY Democrat as my governor, but that's the way it goes sometimes.
To: anniegetyourgun
Not in Indiana, not a chance. The Dems are decent there.

Let's play the game here.
Are these people plants, from who knows where, that have been hiding undercover posting as some sort of "conservatives" just waiting for some grand opportunity to make this site look bad?

Kernan is a snake and a liar. While being the former mayor of south bend, he promised us the college football hall of fame would be self supporting. In the end the taxpayers got hosed and are still paying for it now, even though the majority of the city wants it gone. Also, kernan chased one of the best guns shows out of the city. The gun show sued the city and won, in turn hosing the taxpayers again. Kernan is anti-gun and has been a burden for the taxpayers.
O'bannon even though he is a rat is still a man of principle. If indeed kernan takes charge, I would advise fellow hoosiers to watch out.
To: hoosierboy
Say what you want about his politics, but I know the guy personally, and he's neither a snake nor a liar.
I might also add that he's one of the more well respected people in the Statehouse, along with John Gregg, when he was still there.
By the way, did you ever call Kernan to ask him about his policies when he was Mayor of South Bend? Did you know that he kept his phone number listed in the book and encouraged anyone to call him at home to discuss any problems they had with him?
To: hoosierboy
See, this is the exact opposite of what I'm talking about when it comes to politics in Indiana.
I don't know what it is about some folks that have to make everything into some sort of personal crusade and attack the nice folks that have given up their time to help run the State.
If Kernan ran for Governor, I wouldn't vote for him, but I'd sure like to have the man as a friend and a neighbor. In the end, we don't agree on politics, but that doesn't make him a bad person. This is just what I was saying Indiana people look past--but apparently you don't.
The only guy in recent memory that I can think really drew the ire of the Rs was Evan Bayh, and that was only because he wasn't from Indiana and most of us thought that it was unconstitutional for him to be governor; he was ineligible. I've never met him personally and I can't speak anything like that, but he's been the only one that there was real political divisiveness over.
