You description of dress reminds of the shock I got when my son came home from college in need of a haircut and with a mustache! This was in the 70s.My daughters hair was very long and the fight over "miniskirt" length ongoing!

When my brother let his hair grow in the 70's, I just said to our dad, "Bet you're not man enough to make him cut his hair."

My brother had to pass dad's "inspection" before he gave my brother the money to pay the barber. He got two more trims.
