Heroes is right. How I wish our country could be united again as we were in the days following 9/11. It's the only good that could have come from that horrific day.

A book worth taking the time to read;

Report From Ground Zero, by a New York Firefighter that was there Dennis Smith

...and interviews with various other firefighters and EMT personnel who were at different area's during 911. It goes (very specifically) into that day and what all of those brave men and women went thru, it even mentions those two French guys and even has an interview/recounting from one of them I believe.

CNN- America Remembers.

Whatever you do, the first DVD you must order is 9/11- The Filmmakers Commemoratvie DVD Edition. It is the archive of the French film crew who were with a particular firehouse in New York.

It's excellent, and provides footage inside Tower One of the firemen, the sound of bodies crashing through to the ground, and one of only two pieces of footage of the first plane hitting the North Tower.

Together, these would be the best pieces you could own.

I never watch CNN - I was just channel surfing to check out any good movies which might be on at 8 pm.

DISH with PVR is the only way to go, Lurker.

Cut the cable (unless, of course, you tethered to it because of your cable modem for web access).

I've had satellite for seven years, and I'd NEVER go back to cable.

Hey! How are you - I haven't seen you for awhile!

Sorry your cable went out - but CNN is supposed to be showing 9/11 connected stuff all week. Besides, there are some great threads on FR which have some great links to 9/11 threads or videos.

Also sinkspur told me they just bought the CNN 9/11 video at Amazon for $11.

I give credit to CNN for showing the tower jumpers. They are the first network to do it in a long time.

For whatever providential reason, men from that firehouse and the young firefighter who was the subject of the film all survived that day. This is one riveting tape and one of the most astounding films ever made. I taped the original CBS broadcast and am ordering the DVD. And yes, there is rough language that has not been edited out. But (unfortunately) only very young and sheltered children have not heard these words before, and probably should not be watching the film, due to its intensity, in any event.

I watch this DVD once a month, at least, and never fail to cry, and rant, and marvel at the heroism of my fellow Americans.

You can often get the CNN DVD shrinkwrapped on eBay for about five bucks. Probably not this week, of course, but if you're willing to wait about a month...(I've had the DVD for more than a year, got it for free as an office perk; it'll keep, trust me.)

Amen.

BTW, a (possibly true) sea story from the Pentagon:

The plane hit in a mostly-Navy area.

Well, if you're going to be in a building that takes a catastrophic impact that starts a major CONFLAG, best to be there with a bunch of sailors. The US Navy has two official religions: damage control and firefighting. Everyone organized into teams to fight the fires, communicate with other teams, and rescue trapped or injured personnel. They couldn't do it for very long, but the word is that "dozens" of people were saved by the teamwork and refusal to quit shown by our sailors. But the fires were too intense, and the tools at hand too small, so everyone had to fall back pretty quick.

Around that point, Secretary Rumsfeld went towards the damaged area of the building to get a first-hand look. A Marine Gunnery Sergeant, headed the other way, bellowed, "You are in the Presidential Line of Succession, GET YOUR (Biblical beast of burden) TO A SECURE AREA NOW!

Word is Rummy just made a U-turn and beat feet. You don't argue with a senior Marine Corps noncommissioned officer, even if you ARE the SECDEF.

I give them no credit. They are sitting on video thousands of times more graphic than mere tower jumpers, but have steadfastly refused to air one second of it from the moment it was recorded. Why? Because we the Little People can't handle it. They, the Journalists, have spoken.

(I call them "mere" tower jumpers because, if you did not know the circumstances of the video before watching it, your only thought would be, "Why are these people jumping out of a burning building?" Only via the knowledge that it is video of the WTC on 9/11 does it become bone-chilling. The true story of the carnage that took place that day, however - the photos and videos that would enrage you beyond belief the moment you saw it, regardless of the circumstances - well, CNN isn't ever going to allow you to see that. After all, it might make you mad enough to demand revenge against those that perpetrated the crime ... and to do that wouldn't be very liberal and peace-loving of CNN, now would it?)

Yeah, R. Lee Ermey would be the guy to play the scene if they ever do it in a movie.
