Federal Probe of Las Vegas Fire Begins

LAS VEGAS - Federal agents on Friday were called to investigate a massive fire that burned through a luxury apartment development still under construction, causing about $10 million in damage.

No one was injured in the blaze that started Thursday night and spread rapidly through the construction site, sending flames shooting hundreds of feet into the air.

The fire destroyed 23 buildings and 349 units, and dozens of people were evacuated from nearby homes. Nine buildings in the development were not burned.

Authorities wouldn't speculate on the cause of the fire, but about 20 agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have been called to assist local investigators. All the agents were expected to be in Las Vegas by Saturday afternoon.

"It's a large fire. It's going to take a number of resources, not only to physically examine and do the work at the scene, but the general investigation," said Marti McKee, an ATF spokeswoman in San Francisco.

The development was expected to be completed later this year, said Pamela Puppel, spokeswoman for Ovation Development.

It was the second large blaze at a Las Vegas construction site this year. In January, a fire caused an estimated $6.5 million in damage. Investigators determined it was arson, but no arrests have been made.

The ATF national response team was last called to Las Vegas in June to investigate a suspicious fire at the historic Moulin Rouge casino. Investigators determined that fire was arson.

I'm going to throw this in for whatever it's worth: I have a suspicion one of these groups may have been behind the anthrax mailings of 2001.

I concede I have little to go on, but suspect somebody's darling girl or beamish boy-working as a student intern at one of the big labs: Ft. Detrick,Battelle, or Dugway, figured out a way to "borrow" a few grams of weapons grade anthrax-possibly by switching it with a similarly packaged substitute used for testing.

Getting it to New Jersey would not have been a big problem: people in this age group are often adept at things like swiping a few of Dad's cigarettes, or smuggling in a few lids of grass, etc., etc.

When you read the wording of the notes, you could conclude it was the work of Muslim terrorists-or that its mis-spelling,wording,and tone were more suggestive of young,half-stoned nihilists.

My suggestion: the sentence for these morons--when caught--should be as subjects of medical research. They should leap at the chance to replace a cat, pig, or dog; and anyway cats, pigs and dogs are more useful and much more lovable.

That whole thing in Africa re their elitism last year was great for me. I printed out some the racist/elitist/green Nazism stories about how they didn't want flush toilets, electricity and engineered food for the Africans.

Then everytime I got into a discussion with local Green Racist/Elitist/Enviral/Nazis with other people around, I would take one of the stories out of my billfold and read the comments from the Green Nazis.

I called them World Class KKKers in Green sheets and hoods who wanted to starve and kill off the poor Black Africans.

They would come unglued, and I would ask them if they wanted to kill or harm the innocent black Africans. Most never denied it. A couple did say that the planet was over populated. The people around them couldn't believe what they said. I said if they felt that way, they should do the honorable thing and quit breathing to save the planet instead of killing innocent poor black Africans. They just glared.
