Same here. Actually we stayed in this hotel just once, but I've stood in that (Broadway) TKTS line that was in the lobby of one of the Towers (South Tower?) more times that I can remember.

We stayed in this Marriott some time around 1995. This may sound crazy, but I was worried about staying there at the time because of the 1993 terrorist bombing. I was always afraid that area - including the Marriott - would be hit again in some way, because the huge Twin Towers seemed like such a big target... and there's the Marriott in between the two of them. I never envisioned what ended up happening on 9/11/01 though...

Oh my gosh, you too? At the time I had a subscription to weekly Variety and it listed the shows that were playing and had reviews of them. When we'd fly to NY I'd take the latest issue with me and we'd go through it as we stood in line. It was on the mezzanine of 1WTC (the north tower). Sometimes the line was so long we'd give up and go back the next time we had a break (we were there on business in the south tower). We got to see some great shows and some real stinkers, too. :-)

The Marriott was my home for six months. I was doing contract work for JP Morgan in 1994-95. JPM paid my hotel bill, my meals and my air fare (every two weeks) between JFK (or LaGuardia) and SFO. And they paid me an hourly rate that I will simply characterize as rather generous. I also joined Marriott's Frequent Guest program, and earned quite a few "points." I can stay free at any Marriott in the world for several weeks--or take a cruise.

I became very familiar with the area of Manhattan that was in walking distance of the Marriott (including, of course, Wall Street and the JPM headquarters building.)

So, yes, I definitely feel a secondary emotional impact to the destruction of the Marriott building (and the rest of the WTC complex) beyond a) the horrendous loss of life and property, and b) the act of war and hatred directed at all Americans. But it's secondary.

I was there for a couple of conventions, the last of which was in August 2001. I spent a little while online with some fellow attendees on the afternoon of 9/11, everyone was worried about the hotel staff because they'd been so nice. Someone asked if the hotel could have escaped major damage somehow, and I had to tell them No, there is absolutely no possibility of that; the hotel was right down at the base of the two towers and would have been completely flattened during their collapse. (I was right, but even I was shocked when the pictures came out, and there was only the remnant of one little corner left standing)

I got a lot of resistance to that idea; they couldn't comprehend the scale of the damage, even though those people had all been there in person three weeks earlier, and had all just seen the towers fall on television. It was my first experience with that, but it turned out to be a common reaction. I guess it's because the TV images from the air couldn't really convey the violence of the event, or the force with which those towers fell.

This picture from the ground shows what happened very well, though. This is from the photographer who was unfortunately killed shortly after the photo was taken, when the North tower fell.

You're right. Not much attention is given to the Marriott. I work right across the street at 1 Liberty Plaza and even I only have memories of the twin towers and 7 WTC since our clients were located there. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. The flickering candle is a wonderful screensaver.

Thanks so much for these links. I plan to spend the 11th just looking over all the sites I have bookmarked over the last 2 years. I still have several pictures which I use as screensavers - we can never forget what these people planned to do - they expected there would be 80-100 thousand people in the 2 buildings. That was their goal - to kill them all. The real miracle that day was that we only lost less than 3000.

My ex-boss had just visited Tower 2 the day before 9/11! That was close enough for me.
